Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 22 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/22/2005 5:44:09 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Category Four Hurricane Rita continues to move toward landfall along the northwest Gulf of Mexico shoreline. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations continue across Texas and Louisiana coastal areas. Lake Charles LA is providing evacuations by bus for residents who have no transportation.

Traffic gridlock in the greater Houston area was compounded by gasoline stations without fuel, long lines at those stations still carrying fuel, and record breaking temperatures on the first day of autumn.

Offshore drilling platforms and rigs, as well as oil refineries, petrochemical and natural gas plants are in the path of the storm. Wave heights recorded by buoy have exceeded 38 feet. The refineries threatened by Hurricane Rita are on higher ground than those affected by flooding from Katrina. As a result, speculation abounds regarding future prices for winter heating fuel and gasoline.

Worst case, winds plus 15+ storm surge plus 20 foot waves

Any water over 15.6' feet and it's over the sea wall in Galveston. Link

No new Vortex Data Message or other NHC web source yet, but TWC is reporting that the pressure in Rita is now up another 2 mb to 919 mb.

Where are you listening to Houston FD? I've tried to find some on the net, but the one I found shut down at noon today. Thanks.

MSNBC just said that rita has made turn for LA,,,is that true???

The Almost due W wobble is over, but it's not turned towards LA.

The new run of the GFS just in has moved the track westwards to jus N of Galveston and over Houston.

One or two tried it in Houston after they got off the buses and were promptly shot.

On the other hand, two evacuees from NO ran into a burning Houston house and saved the inhabitants.

ROFL! Donahue has had that effect on me for twenty-five years. It's by the grace of God that I've never run into the man, because if I did, he wouldn't live to tell the tale!

Weather underground posts the new VORTEXES almost instantly. The 919mb Vortex has been out there for like 15 minutes.

The things Donahue was spewing...I'm speechless! THEY despise this country to the core...MY GOD will you ever rid of these evil nasty people! I'm fuming just thinking about that interview! I HATE THE LIBERALS!! How long must we endure their lies and hatred without fighting back! Donahue said they are forming the LARGEST anti-war protest, bigger than the Vietnam rallies, or something like that....ugh!! I hate them!

...It's never a *good* day to be a looter in TX, but it's just gotten a lot worse. See the Texas code on "civil unrest" and "state of emergency"...
--If things erupt, it would be best for the country if Texas reacquaints America w/ the fact that looters & thugs should be taken down at the start. The NO "Let them touch those things" approach has left every urban environment open to destruction upon the slightest diversion from normalcy. I hope th state troopers are keeping their eyes out for potential troublemakers heading into Houston and surrounding areas.

See #951 for a map of the Contraflowed roads. All other roads are running 2-way at this time.

There's at least a 15-mile backup on I-45 up to the Contraflow point at FM1488. Houston-area FReepers report other roads are packed and some Houstonians are turning home for now.
