Bush: Weak terror response led to 9/11
Sep 22, 2005, 19:00 GMT
WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- President Bush said withdrawing from Iraq would be a mistake that would embolden terrorists just as U.S. responses to other attacks led to 9/11 hijackings.
Speaking Thursday at the Pentagon after an update on the war on terror, Bush said a pullback would be seen as weakness and make the United States less safe.
'The terrorists saw our response to the hostage crisis in Iran, the bombings in the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center attack, the killing of American soldiers in Somalia, the destruction of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole,' Bush said. 'The terrorists concluded that we lacked the courage and character to defend ourselves and so they attacked us.'
It was the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, carried out by al-Qaida operatives, that led Bush to launch the war on terror with an attack on Afghanistan, where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden had been given sanctuary. Bush links the fighting in Iraq with the war on terror.
The president said the plan is to follow a strategy of making political gains in the affected counties, while training local personnel to assume security operations.
You and Savage sound alike all right, nitwit
I hope you're right, but waiting until support is at 40% doesn't seem like the best approach.
It's about time he came out and said something publicly.
The Beirut bombing (and failure to properly respond to it) happened on Reagan's watch. Admiration for his overall record shouldn't blind you to the fact that sometimes he blew it.
Reagen may have been less aggressive than he needed to be in response to the barracks bombing in Lebanon, but he certainly took care of the number one pest of the time, Libya (Mohammar Khaddafi). The world has barely heard a peep from Libya since Reagan nearly blasted that place into oblivion. All Clinton did in response to the terror threat was kill a janitor in an aspirin factory and get a Special Forces team in Somalia killed.
Bravo for Bush for standing up for himself. Screw Clinton.
That is all he could have done.. A full blown war against Syria would have brought the Soviet Union into the mix...
Because "W" has shown a willingness to suffer them for too long. That's why some in this thread are pleased he has spoken out and others are exasperated that he has finally spoken, but the damage has been done. I hope not for the upcomming elections.
The next step should be opening up the Ford Building to the public.
What jveritas said.
Guess that puts all the "he's stupid, doesn't read a paper or watch TV (Scarborough) people in their place, too!
About Blessed time!
normally a president should not have to. but he has been so poorly served by the white house political and communications apparatus, that this is what it comes to sometimes.
while he's at it - I recommend to him that he re-assign Scott McClellan to pumping duties in new orleans.
"In his September 2001 FRONTLINE interview, Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger said the U.S. still lacks "actual knowledge of who did the bombing" of the Marine barracks. But it suspected Hezbollah, believed to be supported in part by Iran and Syria. Hezbollah denied its involvement.
The president assembled his national security team to devise a plan of military action. The planned target was the Sheik Abdullah barracks in Baalbek, Lebanon, which housed Iranian Revolutionary Guards believed to be training Hezbollah fighters. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger aborted the mission, reportedly because of his concerns that it would harm U.S. relations with other Arab nations.
:)
He has said so many things that are too subtly nuanced,
but yes, he has said these things0 with different words-now he's speaking plain English.
He just dropped kicked the diplomatically shaded PC ball today. And it's about time. He's been far too generous with the enemy here at home.
Karl Rove, I hope you're taking notes.
Examples linked please????
I don't care if it's New Orleans or a San Francisco bath house, but he needs to be assigned "pumping duties" somewhere besides the WH Press Room.
He is too weak for even those morons in the press room.
Barely.
OOOOOOOOOOOHRAH!
