Bush: Weak terror response led to 9/11

Sep 22, 2005, 19:00 GMT

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- President Bush said withdrawing from Iraq would be a mistake that would embolden terrorists just as U.S. responses to other attacks led to 9/11 hijackings.

Speaking Thursday at the Pentagon after an update on the war on terror, Bush said a pullback would be seen as weakness and make the United States less safe.

'The terrorists saw our response to the hostage crisis in Iran, the bombings in the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center attack, the killing of American soldiers in Somalia, the destruction of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole,' Bush said. 'The terrorists concluded that we lacked the courage and character to defend ourselves and so they attacked us.'

It was the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, carried out by al-Qaida operatives, that led Bush to launch the war on terror with an attack on Afghanistan, where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden had been given sanctuary. Bush links the fighting in Iraq with the war on terror.

The president said the plan is to follow a strategy of making political gains in the affected counties, while training local personnel to assume security operations.

President Bush is this great leader.

He would be if he didn't have the same blind sides as his ol' man. Can't speak and trusts, but does not verify.

Do not underestimate how much the Beirut suicide terrorist attacks on the Marines barracks in October 1983 has emboldened islamic terrorism.

Is this from ScrappleFace or The Onion? He can't be growing a backbone now.

I always wonder if people like you really believe the false things they spew or do you honestly have no idea of what that state of the record is and just make it up out of spite?

Or is there some other reason you act like he has not said this before?

I watched that press conference. Bush clearly was agitated; he snapped at a couple of reporters, and I don't blame him. Why should he have to suffer such fools?

BRAVO Mr. President! It's about damned time you defended yourself against Bubba's attack machine.

No,. he didn't slam anybody. If he did, he also slammed Pres. Carter, Reagan, his father, and the toon.

"I never did give them hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell." Pres. Harry S. Truman

By the looks of things, I am not the only one here who thinks W is overdue in standing up to the left. The same thing can be said of the Republicans in general.

....but ignoring the threat of islamic terrorism then was a strategic mistake and the beast have grown so much from 1983 to 2001 and no one have seriously dealt with terrorism until we got hit on 9/11 and we went to war against islamic terrorism.

Al Qaeda morphed from the Mujahadeen in Bush's daddy's administration. Trying to shove the tragedy into the realm of the Reagan Admin. is a low down and dirty cheap shot!

President Bush is this great leader.

He is a great leader and despite my disagreements with him on some of his domestic policies, there's never been any doubt about his courage or integrity.

hophead's ad hominem was a cheap shot, unworthy of a FReeper! Better served over in DU.

He always had a backbone

His only mistake was trusting the media and the press to actually report the truth

I stood up and cheered when I heard him say this! He has taken off the gloves, and I commend him for him long-suffering to this point.

I expect his rhetoric to increase; and in the end, he will leave his critics in a bloody pulp.

I think it's most of the armed forces these days, and it's HOOOAH.

It is also used as an affirmation, as in "So we're gonna' go out and kick some Mooj butt today, hoooah?"

The answer to that is, of course, "Hoooah!"

However, it's very embarrassing to hear civilian employees in Iraq saying "hoooah".
