WASHINGTON (AP) -- While the Congressional Black Caucus announced Tuesday that it opposes the confirmation of Supreme Court Chief Justice-nominee John Roberts, the Senate's lone black member, Sen. Barack Obama, remained undecided, Obama's spokesman said.
The Illinois Democrat will not take a position on President Bush's nominee until he has at least met privately with Roberts, spokesman Tommy Vietor said.
Roberts and Obama were scheduled to meet at the senator's Capitol Hill office Wednesday, just a couple of hours before Obama is to deliver the keynote address to the Congressional Black Caucus Weekend Kick-Off at the Washington Convention Center.
Even after they meet, Obama may not immediately take a position on Roberts because he may want more time to consider what the judge said, Vietor said.
The federal appeals judge and the senator have never met before, according to Obama's spokesman.
Obama is the only member of the black caucus who is actually eligible to cast a vote on Roberts' confirmation.
Black caucus member Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., said the leadership can announce a caucus position without having the support of every single member.
Davis opposes Roberts' confirmation.
Illinois' other senator, Dick Durbin, the Senate's second-ranking Democrat, has not taken a position on Roberts, according to his spokesman Joe Shoemaker.
Durbin, who is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was expected to take a stance when the committee votes on Roberts' nomination Thursday. The committee held hearings earlier this month to question the 50-year-old judge and former Reagan administration attorney.

Obama's not hesitating. He's just waiting for a slow news day so his predictable "No to Roberts" can garner more face time on the nightly news. The Libune has (again predictably) given him free publicity for NOT saying anything--imagine what they'll do when he actually SAYS something.
A lot of the Dems want to vote Yes on Roberts so they can slam the next nominee
" I voted for Roberts but this nominee [Mr][Mrs][Ms]{Insert name here} is just too extreme."
Well, considering that the House has no role in confirmations, if I were a senator I would ignore them as well, though I'm sure this isn't the reason.
Obama is apparently as empty as the other Democratic hopefulls: Kerry, Algore, etc. (But he looks good!!! and he's black!!!!)
Obama's mother is White. His father screwed back to Africa when he was born.
Obama is an empty black suit that the libs are grooming for Veep.
Did the caucus even give a reason for opposing him? Did the reporter ask someone why they opposed him?
Darth Clinton has trained Darth Obama well.
He evidently doesn't have enough French heritage to say, "I actually voted for Roberts before I voted against him."
Yeah, I wonder why they keep saying he is black. He's just as black as he is white. Wouldn't you think?
If he doesn't vote against Roberts his base will be saying the same of him that they say of Clarence Thomas and Condi Rice.... And if he does vote against Roberts, he's likely to be unelectable for his presidency run. He'll probably be absent that day :)
