Extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Rita continues to threaten the Greater Houston Metropolitan area. The forecast track has shifted slightly to the northeast, increasing the risk to Southwest Louisiana, and a significant portion of the oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Perry is urging all coastal residents between Beaumont and Corpus Christi to evacuate as soon as possible.

How bizarre about that power outage......it makes sense but it isn't something I would have thought of.......there are a bunch of car sitting out there!! Plus - I don't knw about where they are but it hit 100 degrees here in Dallas today!

Going forward until landfall, she has to compete with land first on the north side, then the west too. I'm hoping the land interaction will knock some wind out of her sails.
dunno - but thought it might be of help. I would drive and rive until I found a place, even if it was St. Lous. There is a phone number to check on other areas. The rooms aren't that bad at these and they have kitchens.

This shear is NOT a result of her outflow. The shear is direcly due to the 200mb level high that is SSE of Rita a/o 1800Z, and is quite evident on 200mb contour charts.
The low on the surface in tandem with an upper level high form what is known as a warm core low. This is in direct contrast to what is over Mexico presently, i.e, a high on the surface with an upper level low above it (cold core high). Two other entities also exist (cold core lows, and warm core highs), but are immaterial to this situation.
Aside from the obvious difference between the cold core high over Mexico, and the warm core low known as Rita, Rita's high pressure cap is offset somewhat. It is the high pressure influence of this cap that is essentially squirting Rita forward. Surface, mid and high level winds that she encounters as she moves forward act as a rudder. However, in Rita's case at present, this upper level high is hindering intensification of the storm's core.

That brought back memories of living in Galveston as a little girl. We were taking swimming lessons in the hotel pool and one day they were cleaning it so the instructor took us to the beach. I almost drowned in one of those ship wakes.
I doubt it. They don't carry guns, just radios. At best they might have called the police who are more than busy today with other things.

Thats fine except milk jugs dont shoot back. A .44mag will get you killed in a combat situation because the severe recoil will prevent quick follow-up shots. Save the .44mag for hunting or shooting milk jugs.

Sounds like your mom isn't far from the hospital where I work. I *think I may know the name of her nursing home. Right now the models show we'll have some rain, but nothing we can't handle. The city has taken a lot of precautions, and remember W will be here to call in the calvary if necessary!

Hope that hotel stands...the entire city govt is housed there.
