Extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Rita continues to threaten the Greater Houston Metropolitan area. The forecast track has shifted slightly to the northeast, increasing the risk to Southwest Louisiana, and a significant portion of the oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Perry is urging all coastal residents between Beaumont and Corpus Christi to evacuate as soon as possible.

Are you just joining us? It definately has.
"The best thing about the storm is that it may cool the troops off a little. The red clay and pine woods at Ft. Benning..."
Blanco on now on CNN
For what it's worth (not much really), Babble Blank-O is speaking... "everyone below I-10 should evacuate."
No such thing as impossible, with a hurricane in the Gulf. Perhaps you should take a look at the storm track from Elena, in 1985.
crap no tv at work - can you post a quick synopsis?
There is no 6. Cat. 5 just keeps going. I believe earlier on this thread someone posted a Chart of the Safford-Simpson scale. Five goes up pretty high.
What was that movie where the prisoners took over the airplane?
Telling people to leave now.......flashback!
Gosh, she sounds like such a simpleton; can't even read a speech.
Urging nursing homes to evacuate.
she shoulda been on statewide tv at daylight this morning.
If the Gulf was a perfect circle, with Rita currently in the middle of it, then at its current rate of turn, it would indeed hit New Orleans head on.
But the Gulf isn't, Rita isn't, and it can't get there from here unless it starts turning faster.
Much faster.
Or slower.
If it stalls, landfall time and location is anyone's guess. Keep an eye on those forward speeds.
Con Air?
Here we go again
Calcasieu Parish: Eveyone needs to leave the parish. Buses will be running from the civic center until around 10PM tonight. There is a 99.9% chance electricity will be lost due to trees and wind.
Or are you refering to the POINT IT COMES ON LAND as moving eastward? Two different things.
Blanco on CNN
1:10 EST
Blanco on CNN: "Rita will hit Louisiana"
15 seconds later
Blanco on CNN: "possibly hit us directly"
Blanco on CNN:"We want to move as many people as possible out of harm's way."
Blanco on CNN: "We did this for Katrina, we want to do this for Rita."
Read my post above.
And notice that when anybody asks a question, she NEVER can answer and always has to have somebody else step up with the answer.
Well, that's what keeps meterologists employed. There's ALWAYS going to be an exception. I wouldn't bet on it.
Rush had an email from a LA listener who said Governor Blanco stated that her citizens should write their social security numbers on their arms.
Which one of you Rita Thread Freepers emailed Rush????
I know I've seen that post a few times over here. Now it is going into folklore that Blanco suggested it. lol
Yes, she should have.
