CDC Considers Bioterror Antidote Kits for U.S. Homes
Global Security Newswire ^ | September 21, 2005 | E-Mail Alert

Posted on 09/21/2005 6:15:35 PM PDT by ExSoldier

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering providing bioterror antidote kits to U.S. homes, Agence France-Presse reported yesterday.

Agency spokesman Von Roebuck said that the kits could be distributed in Seattle to determine their feasibility.

“There are a lot of avenues being looked at as to how we can get vaccines and antidotes to the general public in an emergency situation,” he said, adding that plans are still “in the drawing-board stage.”

“At this point, there is nothing set in stone,” Roebuck said. “We want to have a very open mind when it comes to how we distribute things.”

Roebuck said that the U.S. Postal Service is being considered to distribute medications in the event of an attack. Stockpiling drugs at hospitals and clinics and “seeing what can be done in folk’s homes” are also being explored, he said.

The federal health agency contacted the city of Seattle about “a preparedness initiative,” said city spokesman James Apa.

“They want to do a trial in Seattle,” he said. “We had a briefing and are just waiting for more details” (Agence France-Presse/Turkish Press, Sept. 20).

Well, this sounds like fun. BTW, all emphasis is mine in the post. Anyway, HOW much do you trust the US Postal Service to get you your antidote in the event of a terror attack with weaponized smallpox?

Methinks that somebody somewhere, knows something WE don't and they're both very nervous about it and don't quite know how to still keep the public informed and avoid a national panic. Anybody remember that movie with Charlton Heston called The Omega Man?

You've got antidotes to weaponized biotoxins? Lessee, you got these from a prescritption by your Doc and Walgreens carries them?

Got atropine injectors, too? For VX or other types of nerve agent. But, it's not an antidote, just treats the symptoms until you can get to a hospital.....

IIRC, there's no antidote for smallpox. Only prior vaccination will help with smallpox which kills about 1/3 of those infected.

Makes sense "Adam Selene" would be prepared and independent.

Make sure your antibiotics are up to date.

First off, I'm pretty sure there is something which can be given for smallpox after infection, but I could be wrong. Just something I remember from my stay at NBC Warfare School. OTOH, I'm pretty sure that a lab weaponized strain is going to be tougher to deal with; much more lethal and fast acting. I seriously doubt that there are antitoxins or antidotes available to anybody from any nation for these, except what may be carried in a national stockpile for use by the military, only.

Some items I'm not talking about. Broad spectrum antibiotics. The whole set of dig a hole and pull it in after you stuff. Iodine pills (radiation protection) Masks and gloves. Water supplies. Water purification supplies.

I've had smallpox innoculations in the 70's. I'd like to see a program where older people who've had them get re-upped then their immune globulin becomes available for possibly infected younger folk. Probably the fastest way of getting a pool of immune folk to care for others plus a pool of reaction prevention material to make innoculations safer (should have started thins 9/12/2001)

Smallpox is the white mans enemy, the Avian flu is the Asians enemy.

I've heard that more Europeans died of smallpox and V.D.s than Hitler killed.

"Anybody remember that movie with Charlton Heston called The Omega Man?"

Based on the short story "My Name Is Legion" by Robert(?) Matheson(?) IIRC. Last normal human on earth, fighting all the vampires.

As far as USPS goes, not a freaking bit. The only thing they reliably deliver to my place is the third-class advertisement crud. The original spam, in hardcopy. I'm retired AF, and my wife spent the last 15 years of my career moving with me as the Fairy Godmother department willed, including to a base within 15 minutes flight time of the Soviet border. She'd probably rather have the antidotes and immunizations stored here well in advance, and probably shipped via FedEx or UPS.

Let the fools panic. That will mean more stuff for those of us who survive.

I may be mistaken, but I think you can be vaccinated right after infection and have a good chance of surviving. As for a weaponized version I'm not sure. If the weponization was to better disperse it, then it should not matter. If weaponization included selecting a super bug, then were screwed.

Every American should buy a small bottle of Doxycycline. Personal responsiblility works. Besides being the only cure for Anthrax that works, it is the cheapest of anti-biotics at .75 cents a dose.

If we buy our own, it will cost $7.50 per person, if we let the government buy it for us it will cost an additional $100 dollars per person in "distribution costs".

Distribution costs is the politicaly correct word for theft in this case.
