Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast

Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu

A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.

Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

Hopefully prayers are going up all over the nation, unless you are watching Foxnews?

...barring something unforseen...

It's that "something unforseen" that always gets you.

CNN has Al Haynes on the phone...isn't he the pilot who landed the plane with one engine (or something like that?) in St. Louis?

That's all they fly, which is why I'd never fly them, even if they did come to Texas.

ooops...that last post was a response to onyx, sorry arasina.

onyx: I've seen FNC stay with car chases. Guess this is not as exciting until the landing?

I've watched them stay with car chases for over an hour....till the guy's caught. Guess you're right, lol!

Previous posters say A320 has same landing gear as Boeing 787

This a/c is too small to dump fuel. Fly around awhile and burn some. The nose gear strut and piston are connected with a scissor link that can be disconnected on the ground for tight turns while pushing or towing. My guess is that it was not reconnected prior to departure by the ground handling crew. It will shear off.

One of the world's safest airlines is based in El Salvadore, Grupo Taca. A pilot of theirs made a dead stick landing of a 737 in a grass field outside of New Orleans, no injuries, an amazing thing.

They do pretty good work down there.

So, they get their planes maintenanced in San Salvador to save a few bucks...so they can be one of those profitable companies at the expense of this?

Robert Hager on MSNBC saying it would probably be good if the nose gear breaks off and they skid on the plane nose.
