Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)

A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.

Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

Fox's Shepard Smith pointed out that the Frog airplane, a 300A Airbus, cannot dump fuel. It has no doubt flown around to consume fuel to lessen the danger of fire when a "soft" landing is attempted.

Such landings are often pulled off without injuring anyone aboard. Let us pray that this is such a landing.

The history of this particular nose gear is collapse when stressed to excessive forces, ie: too steep of a landing, but that is with the wheels in the correct orientation. It could collapse or shear at the pinion. Either way, I think the Captain will do his job well.

It's possible the onboard computer system can be set to maintain the correct angle of the aorcraft while landing so as to minimize the speed at which the nose will level.

That happened to me once too, except there was no foam. New Haven to Washington, DC. I learned a new euphemism that say, the fire trucks paralleling us down the runway, spouts aimed at us, were "administrative procedures." We too had a malfunctioning landing gear light - the gear was fine and we landed normally. But, I was near to getting airsick for the first and only time, between the stress of the situation and the fact we were circling for hours in choppy air.
