THE O'CONNOR VACANCY SHORT LIST

See here :

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/20/politics/politicsspecial1/20confirm.html?pagewanted=print

The New York Times reports that, "The White House is reshuffling its short list of potential Supreme Court nominees with a new emphasis on finding someone who will hold up under the pressure of what is expected to be fierce confirmation battle..."

This revised criteria allegedly weakens the chances for Judge Janice Rogers Brown. Also on the list is Judge Priscilla Owen, who, "strategists say the White House is evaluating whether her reticence and mild manner would be a strength or a weakness under interrogation in the Senate."

The Times lists the following Judges as also being on the short list:

Judge Edith H. Jones

Judge Edith Brown Clement

Judge Alice M Batchelder

Judge Karen Williams

Judge Consuelo M. Callahan

THE O'CONNOR VACANCY SHORT LIST

Incorrect premise off the top. Roberts is the replacement for O'Connor. It's Renquist's seat that is still vacant (assuming Roberts gets approved by the Senate).

No he's not. He's replacing Rehnquist as Chief Justice and O'Connor will serve with Roberts for a week or two, so he can't be her replacement.

After all the things she said about Roberts, a Coulter pick would be beneficial. In addition to infuriating the Dimwits, she'd keep Roberts in line to avoid the "I told you so" opinions Coulter would write any time Robersts veered into Souter territory.

Consuelo M. Callahan is also Spanish for Souter.

Levin is too combative and openly conservative to be considered. Republican expediency is the first priority in the process.

Brown or Edith Hollan Jones. It's past time the GOP was sent a message that it will nominate and confirm known originalist or suffer the consquences at the ballot box.

My assessment: In replacing O'Conner, Williams, Clement, or Callahan would move the court to the left. Jones or Batchelder would hold or move to the right.

And, the court has already been moved to the left in all likelihood with the appointment of Roberts to replace Rehnquist.

How can the Republicans expect the base to care who is elected or bother voting unless Bush keeps his promise to appoint Scalia-like originalists?

The selection might be expedient, but the confirmation will be everything but. The dems are sure to gang-tackle and bloody the next nominee. I know W won't nominate Levin, but he would serve to bloody the inquisitors before the real nominee would come forth.

I’m tired of listening to the MSM and the Democratic political establishment – let’s put it out front and center – nominate Janice Rogers Brown and let them go bananas – the majority of this country, and certainty most of those that live between the geographic fringes of the North American continent, are fed up with left wing outrage and non factual rhetoric – colloquial liberal cant (as opposed to traditional liberal cant which I can relate to) has gotten completely out of hand – let the moon bats direct their venom and spittle against an African American female nominee and expose their wretched nonsense for what it is – why not? – it’s the lesser of two evils, either continue to defend against the tide of left wing nonsense or go on the attack – even if she loses the nomination, the country will at least have the chance to be honest with itself – I might even renew my subscription to the New York Times just so see how they justify attacking such a target.

It has nothing to do with cajones but rather being sensible. Ann flies off at the handle and makes too many off the wall remarks and she has neither judicial experience nor temperance. I know many of us want to see someone standing up to these creeps and blasting them but Bush is not of the same mind.

He never was but the Treason Media knew that it could yank the chains of the gullible by claiming he was.

A conservative Black woman is a sure ticket. Let's see "Bullet Head" Leahy or "Fat Boy" Ted, or even "Dead Man Walking" Reid try and dump on her! They do and it's bye-bye Demoncrats.

Roberts is no moderate and the voting by Specter and Leahy means nothing after all Scalia had 90+ votes and is certainly no moderate.

Since the "base" is apparently clueless wrt these matters there is nothing to worry about. It isn't as if the "base" has knowledge about these matters. Wild-eyed raving does not make a Justice approvable to anyone except MAYBE the "base" though I am sure that we will see the same inane threats no matter who is nominated.

It is my contention that what is claimed to be the "base" around these parts never voted for Bush in the first place not considering him a real conservative. After all he did win elections.

"Nominating Marc Levin would soften up the opposition. His barbs at the "honorable" Senators would be sweet!"

I had the same thoughts about Pat Robertson.

that would be a REAL blast!!!
