NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

After losing power to Hurricane Isabelle last year, we (on well-water) used water from our pool to flush toilets.

What is going to happen at Victoria? My husband has a niece that works at the newspaper there.

I don't know. My plans are up in the air because my Dad won't make up his mind until tomorrow and I don't want to leave without my parents. My mother has emphysema and is on OXYGEN!! He is the most stubborn human on the planet. I have already booked a room in Boerne for them to go to because he won't do anything until the last minute. I hope I can convince them to leave!

Hopefully we will be on the west side of the hurricane, which if you're going to be in one, that's the place to be. They rode out Carla in 1961 and lost electricity for a week or two with no major damage to their house. We'll see.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/21/katrina.impact/index.html

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- The number of deaths in Louisiana blamed on Hurricane Katrina has risen to 799, the state's Department of Health and Hospitals said Wednesday, bringing the overall death toll from the storm to 1,033.

Mississippi reports 219 people killed in the storm, Florida's toll is 11 dead and Alabama and Georgia each report 2 killed.

The new total came as Louisiana prepares for a second hurricane, Rita, which strengthened to a Category 4 storm -- the same level as Katrina when it slammed into the Louisiana-Mississippi border on August 29. Rita's maximum sustained winds were about 140 mph

Anyone heard if there's any shear in the forecast?

Cantore and Steve Lyons were saying last night on The Weather Channel that no wind shear was in the forecast.

I wouldn't count on Victoria to be on the west side...it may very well be near the center - or even to the east of it.

Push comes to shove - you can always dig a temporary latrine/trench

I might add,use lime in the latrine as well. Also, cover with soil after each "use".

Cantore mentioned last night that every 1/2 a degree movement of the eye is 30 , probably 45 miles or more now of coastline that comes into play one way or the other.
They are playing with fire trying to decide which side of the eye wall they are going to be on.

What's the longest amount of time a hurricane has maintained itself at category 5 strength? Do you know?

How old are they? Victoria will probably suffer extensive tree damage and some structural damage at the least. They may be looking at weeks without power. Can your parents cope with that?

They are mid-70s. Dad can, but Mom can't. I'm going to have to stage a coup, I'm afraid.

TXCN presser: Perry: No need to panic, you have plenty of time to get out - if you start *NOW*.

Perry: "If you are on the coast between Beaumont and Corpus Christi, now is the time to get out."
