Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.
Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.
Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Thank you for the compliment, but that is not the time for those now.
There are real people in real danger, and the contrast is striking between a Republican led Texas and a democrat led Louisiana.
extrap isn't a real pressure reading
Hubby has been a ham since he was 12 years old and built his first rig. He built a Heathkit rig at one time. Do you remember those? It was fascinating to listen to him when he was on it talking to people all over the world.
Its best to be Safe than sorry.... I would hit the road....Come back on Monday...
That's the crazy thing - this storm is growing so quickly that Florida is still getting hit with heavy outer bands!
Houston, Galveston -- we could watch another American city get destroyed in the space of a few weeks. Will keep closer track of this thread now that I have a new mouse and can actually maneuver the 'net again.
Austin is going to get some wind, though how much will depend on what Rita hits landfall with. If she's at 165 mph or higher, Austin might get 60-80 mph winds. If she comes in at less, then wind will be less. There will also be tornadoes.
If you have a place to go, go. Better to be safe.
Galveston set a record high temperature today of 96 degrees.
This broke the old record of 94 in 1953.
My personal opinion is that since you are already close to Austin, you won't have to make that decision for another 36-48 hours at the latest. If the storm has a bulls eye for the coast in the area 50-60 miles south of Galveston, you could indeed have some high winds. I would listen carefully to local (Austin) weather on TV or the net and listen to what the anticipated maximum gusts will be. Make your decision then based on the latest available information. Good luck and God bless.
This thing is gonna be stronger than gilbert.
no visitors/no reporters/no Bush haters admitted.
( No exceptions, Jerry).
H. EXTRAP 914 mbUp from 902 or is it apples and oranges?
It's down from the last Vortex Data Message, which had it at 920 mb. There were other reports that had the pressure as low as 908 mb, and a mention of a conference call that it had dropped to 906 mb.
I guess I was a little nuts, but like you I am sick of the obvious bias...
Right, NautiNurse and I are both in the same city, so we compare weather conditions from her area of the city to mine.
---"Anyways, should I follow my personal gut feelings and be safe..."---
As one who prepared for Y2K (with a bit of humor from myself and a LOT from my wife) I would say follow your gut. I sure didn't mind a bit of a laugh at myself after i found out that I didn't need to prepare for y2k. (although I'm now better prepared for an earthquake!). I'd rather have a chuckle at myself for being so paranoid than to look back and say "If only ..."
Plus - I've always found that following mom's gut feeling can't lead you too far astray!
They show that big pic of the pier in Galveston...witht the structure at the end. I assume that is going to disappear, right?
2. Did I hear the mayor say she and a skeleton staff were staying...ion the top floor of some building that is 37 feet above sea level..but they are expecting a 30ft+ storm surge? Does that make any sense?
It makes me feel better to email them. I am getting so upset with the left msm that it just makes my blood boil.
emailing helps the blood.....
LOL. May I suggest a bottle, perhaps a Jeroboam or a Nebuchadnezzar if you are entertaining some friends in a safe place and ride out the storm and the aftermath of the reporters;)
That would be nice....
906mb and dropping
