NEW YORK -- The New York Times Co. said Tuesday it would cut 500 jobs, or about 4 percent of its work force, as part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs. The reductions come atop another 200 jobs that were cut earlier this year.
Gahh! I just had a mental image of Maureen Dowd in a pink slip!
Why don't they slash at least 4,000 jobs??? It's hard to believe that it requires around 10,000 people to put out the bad toilet paper that passes as their various "newspapers".... a handful of bloggers can do a better job on most of the important news of the day for around 1/100000 of the cost.... and with trying to charge people $50 for the 'privelege' of reading Dowd, Krudgeman, et al is really hilarious..... I hope they're drowning in red ink!
Really?
How's the Wall Street Journal doing?
ML/NJ
I guess the NYT isn't counting on its new online editorial subscription service to generate a profit.
Lay off another 12,000 and they just might have the makings of a decent paper.
They've been outsourced to Mark Steyn now that everyone's getting their news off the world wide web. Has anyone seen reports that the Times is calling for protective tariffs on offshore news?
LOL!
Before we all gloat to much, this is far from pleasant for the people who are losing their jobs because management insists on retaining the likes of Maureen Dowd and Paul Krugman.
Better value for the same use.
>>>I nominate Maureen Dowd for a pink slip!
I might be willing to pay for a picture of that - Mo in a pink slip...maybe $0.02 :)
500 jobs? It takes over 500 people to run a b#llsh!t factory?
LOL!
Now the claws come out. Once those people sense the free market dynamics taking place ...PANIC!!!
If 500 jobs is 4% of the NYT workforce, that means that the NYT employs around 12,500 people. It is amazing that it takes that many people to daily produce such a load of crap.
Dowd counter-curse post
The NY Times is the best paper in the world. It's even better than Bounty at picking up spills, but it's rather expensive and doesn't fit on a roller.
That is %96 too few. Close down the fish wrap.
Throw the whole lot on the street to find real jobs.
Course if they keep writing lies and made up crap and dissing our president an dcountry maybe soon I'll get my wish.
I was thinking the same thing, spiff. Likewise, when the article said the Philly Inquirer is cutting its editorial staff from 500 people -- 500 on the editorial staff? Talk about bloated -- sounds like the DMV or some other mega-bureaucracy. I don't see how these rags generate nearly enough income to maintain such ponderous staffs, even with all the cutbacks. Well, we are making progress, anyway. In some ways it's better to watch them die a slow death.
