Challenged by Creationists, Museums Answer Back
The New York Times ^ | 9/20/2005 | CORNELIA DEAN

Posted on 09/20/2005 7:02:45 AM PDT by Right Wing Professor

ITHACA, N.Y. - Lenore Durkee, a retired biology professor, was volunteering as a docent at the Museum of the Earth here when she was confronted by a group of seven or eight people, creationists eager to challenge the museum exhibitions on evolution.

They peppered Dr. Durkee with questions about everything from techniques for dating fossils to the second law of thermodynamics, their queries coming so thick and fast that she found it hard to reply.

After about 45 minutes, "I told them I needed to take a break," she recalled. "My mouth was dry."

That encounter and others like it provided the impetus for a training session here in August. Dr. Durkee and scores of other volunteers and staff members from the museum and elsewhere crowded into a meeting room to hear advice from the museum director, Warren D. Allmon, on ways to deal with visitors who reject settled precepts of science on religious grounds.

" I don't think you have anything resembling a cogent argument"

Your entire argument and debate rests on "my freshman biology teacher says so"?

LOL.

Your lack of comprehension of fundamental science is not my problem.

You lack even a junior high education in critical thinking skills and analytical science. It is not my responsibility to bring your skills up to par in order to participate in an intelligent way.

As for my "jargon", there is nothing pseudo about it. I've led R&D projects succesfully for over 20 years. You had some biology class somewhere? LOL.

You cannot grasp how to begin formulating a theory. Then you expect to hide behind your biology teacher when asked pointed questions?

Next time bring your teacher to the debate. Your teacher will also tell you that current biology does not explain the origins of life (at least not with any more than pure conjecture, acts of faith.)

The sad thing is that your faith is destroyed by simple logic, because no science justifies it.

My faith is strengthened by science because science is the unveiling of Gods creation.

ROFL! More 'argumentum ad la-la-la-I can't-hear-you".

Rolling on the floor laughing while humming logical fallacies to yourself is not a victory celebration, it is the tragedy of a Right Wing Professor evolving into a Left Wing Professor with a propensity for rolling on the floor with twits like the one who wrote this article.

You provided NO quotes supporting your lunatic twits stupid assertions that Bush is some sort of Luddite. You know it, I know it and anybody reading this stupid thread knows it.

As General Honore says "Don't get stuck on stupid Prof".

===========

That's quite a few personal attacks for one post. Rules suggest that this is not a good idea. Can you say, Suspended, boys and girls? Can you say, Banned, boys and girls?

You can make your points without such attacks.

Great! Then you, using scientific logic, terms, and processes, can provide an alternative explanation for the river?

I can! I can!

you must define their velocities and then define their starting positions at t(0) relative to each other

But we have that kind of information for living systems. You were asserting that to study life we need to know the absolute initial conditions.

I can! I can!

And was it formed in 6000 or so years also?

"You are asserting that nothing is known until everything is known -- an assertion so monumentally stupid as to qualify for an entire new double-wide in the the museum of regrettable posts."

Certainly regrettable for you since you made yourself look the fool.

Now go back and tell me where I said "nothing is known until everything is known" Go ahead. Take your time.

Don't ever put words in my mouth, it as an act of utter desperation in an attempt to save your pride.

As for me, I am done. I have a hurricane to prepare for. We are evacuating.

"A scoffer seeks wisdom and finds none,
But knowledge is easy to one who has understanding.
Leave the presence of a fool, Or you will not discern words of knowledge.
The wisdom of the sensible is to understand his way, But the foolishness of fools is deceit. "

Actually, he can't. That's the rationale for VI.

I'm confused. Is that Deep VI, or short for LXXXVIing him, or what? I know we went through this on another thread, but I didn't take notes, I forgot to study, and didn't know there'd be a pop quiz. Besides its late and I haven't shaved and the dog ate my homework.

Please be sure to post the names of any publicly traded companies you "led R&D projects" for - I need to make sure they're not in my portfolio anywhere.

In the mean time, I'm sure I can solicit some recommendations for a good freshman-level chemistry text - you need it. Someone who's going to have me bring along a high school teacher to debate you probably ought to start by learning that DNA is made up of four nucleotides, not four amino acids. Without a little more background on your part, I really don't think I need anything so lofty as a biology teacher - you need someone a bit more your speed until you remove the training wheels. Perhaps my six year old daughter will be available to discuss this with you tomorrow.

Now go back and tell me where I said "nothing is known until everything is known" Go ahead. Take your time.

Here's what you said:

You do not know the initial conditions, nor the primary force behind life. yet you know life scientifically? nonsense.

First, let's look at what we do know.

The phrase "knowing life scientifically" is rubbish. Science will never know everything. It works at a level where it can make progress. It does not need to know the first three billion years of history to study how populations change, any more than astronomers need to know the positions of the planets three billion years ago in order to say where they were ten thousand years ago or tomorrow.
