First, let's look at what we do know.

We know enough about the structure and chemistry of genetic material to build an infectious virus from the barest snippets of RNA.
We know enough about the structure of living things to modify the code and make commercially useful variations of living things.
We know at least 20 kinds of mutation. We know how they work and what they do.
We know the full genome for a number of living things. We know what each gene does and how variations in the gene affect the phenotype.

The phrase "knowing life scientifically" is rubbish. Science will never know everything. It works at a level where it can make progress. It does not need to know the first three billion years of history to study how populations change, any more than astronomers need to know the positions of the planets three billion years ago in order to say where they were ten thousand years ago or tomorrow.
