.....just give the the news and not opinions.

Agree........most especially in situations such as this.

while folks in the path of Rita can learn from mistakes made from Katrina and information garnered from it - now is not the time to do anything other than provide information regarding states of emergency, evacs, evac routes, preparedness lists, etc - for their AREA, not what should have been done somewhere else 3 weeks ago or even last year.

sorry for the rant - I guess I need to get off the subject of the media right now - it's making me crazy.

Yep. I'll check tomorrow. I guess she would have to go to a hospital. I would prefer NOT to take her to a nursing home.

The danger here is wind; we are "nestled in the pines"--over forty tall ones. Water would not be a problem --we're at the top of a hill.

I've had a multi-battery/12DC/120volt AC convertor/solar-backup alternative power system for about 6 years now. Works well, but requires maintenance.

Won't power everything for ever, or most things for long periods, but it keeps appliances like the heater fan for the nat. gas furnace running in winter storms. Lights. Radios, etc.

If worse comes to worse go to the dollar store and buy some gallon rubber maid pitchers and fill your own. They may not freeze as well but at least it will be drinking water.
