North Korea Statement Puts Nuclear Deal In Jeopardy

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea will not give up its nuclear weapons until the United States provides civilian atomic reactors, Pyongyang said on Tuesday in a statement that significantly undermined a deal reached just a day earlier.

Six countries, including the North and the United States, had agreed on Monday to a set of principles on dismantling the Pyongyang's nuclear programs in return for aid and recognizing its right to a civilian nuclear program.

Skeptics had said the deal was long on words, vague on timing and sequencing and short on action: the North's comments made clear just how short.

"The U.S. should not even dream of the issue of the DPRK's dismantlement of its nuclear deterrent before providing LWRs," said the North Korean Foreign Ministry statement, which was published by the official KCNA news agency.

If we stop feeding them and if we'd let them starve some, they might change their tune.

Why we are so nice is baffling to me.

The North Koreans are ALREADY starving, they don't need any help in that arena.

But we aren't dealing with the North Korean people, just the psycho in charge and his cronies.

What I don't understand about the left is they are pushing for us to build a nuclear reactor in North Korea. They insist we should not care if Iran is building a nuclear power plant (and why does a country swimming in oil need nuclear power?). Yet, even mention plans to build a US nuclear power plant and they go beserk. Well they're off their rockers anyway, but you know what I mean.

Today's Timeline

1: DPRK negotiator agreed to deal
2: All sides announce deal
3: The Boy Who Would Be King or someone near him doesn't like deal
4: Foreign Ministry announced "no deal."
5: DPRK negotiator is executed.

I wouldn't put it past Bubba to have faxed Kimmy suggesting he hold out for LWRs, just to stick it to GWB.

That didn't take long!

Kim wakes up with a splitting hangover, and says: "I agreed to WHAT!". Then he executes twenty aides for malfeasance and issues a retraction. Same old.

The trouble is that we're letting the North Koreans off relatively easily because the administration wants to be able to point to Iran and say "The North Koreans denuclearized, now you." The North Koreans, of course, being completely irrational, take our kid-gloves approach to mean that we're scared and proceed to make all sorts of stupid demands. Should have nuked 'em back in '94.

Not likely. The only thing that will change their tune is their total destruction through the excercise of military force. Kim Jong Il and his babysitters are perfectly happy to sacrifice all of North Korea's population so that they can sleep peacefully in their bunkers. They're criminals, nothing more, nothing less.

Yep. A pony would be fine with me. Or anything that he can afford to put a cash down payment on. Sorry, we do not accept dirt, string, or colored beads as currency. Maybe the PRC can float him a loan against their basket of currency.
I just do not see the business upside to selling (more like giving) an economically failed state a nuclear reactor. Maybe the UN can start a "nukes for multicolored paper" program. If my congressman or senator support any such nonsense, we will field and elect a more conservative candidate.
