Pope bans homosexuals from ordination as priests

Pope Benedict XVI has given his approval to a new Vatican policy document indicating that men with homosexual tendencies should not be ordained as Catholic priests, reports Catholic World News.

The policy statement is a direct result of the pope's concern about the pedophilia scandal in the church – especially in the U.S.

The new document, prepared by the Congregation for Catholic Education in response to a request made by the late Pope John Paul II in 1994, will be published soon. It will take the form of an "Instruction," signed by the prefect and secretary of the congregation: Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski and Archbishop Michael Miller, according to the report.

The report was first referenced on Joseph Farah's nationally syndicated radio program last week by Raymond Arroyo, author of the new book "Mother Angelica: The Remarkable Story of a Nun, Her Nerve and a Network of Miracles." Arroyo has covered the papacy more than any other journalist

The text, approved by Benedict at the end of August, says that homosexual men should not be admitted to seminaries even if they are celibate, because their condition suggests a serious personality disorder that detracts from their ability to serve as ministers, says the CWN report.

Priests who have already been ordained, if they suffer from homosexual impulses, are strongly urged to renew their dedication to chastity and a manner of life appropriate to the priesthood.

The "Instruction" does not represent a change in church teaching or policy, according to the Vatican.

Catholic leaders have consistently taught that homosexual men should not be ordained to the priesthood. Pope John XXIII approved a formal policy to that effect, which still remains in effect. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, that policy was widely ignored, particularly in North America.

The Congregation for Catholic Education prepared the "Instruction" after soliciting advice from all of the world's bishops, from psychologists and from moral theologians. A draft was then circulated among the Vatican dicasteries concerned with the issue, notably including the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The pending release of the "Instruction," in the face of certain criticism from liberal forces in America and Western Europe, demonstrates the determination of the Vatican to improve the quality of priestly ministry and to protect the church from some of the scandals that have recently shaken the Catholic community – and no doubt deterred many men from entering priestly training.

Informed sources in Rome indicate that the "Instruction" probably will be made public after the Synod of Bishops, which meets in Rome Oct. 2 through 23.

still commenting about people behind their backs, how admirable and self righteous!

Now that is funny. In post 153 you commented about me "behind [my] back", so your words apply to you. Perhaps you don't remember, but you asked me not to ping you again. Feel free to talk about me behind my back. It simply doesn't bother me because I have nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of.

Homosexuals (obvious by the thousands of molested boys vs. girls) proves that it is much harder for the homosexual to suppress their sexual urges than the heterosexual. It should never have been taken off the list of pathologies, even though pressured by the homosexual mafia.

He provides you a list which I have not specifically affressed...

That much is true. You have not specifically addressed the studies I've provided, despite your previous statements to the contrary. At least now you're being honest.

except for two studies upon he relied to paint all homosexuals as the same

Not at all. How many times have I said just the opposite? In fact I said "Nobody is saying all homosexuals molest children. In fact most don't. in post 168.

He has posted research which is unreliable and doesn't follow established principles for validity.

And you are more than welcome to point out which study was incorrect. Your problem is, you never do. John O would ask you time and time again but you refused to comment. I'd ping John O but his wife just died.

Even freeper knak pointed some out to you here and you back pedaled.

When I pointed this out to him and suggested he attend a course he became accusatory and defensive.

Oh boy. I really try to be nice to everybody, but you consistently misrepresent everything about me.

And one or two of his minions and fellow zealots followed suit.

Yeah, that must have been when the moderator told you to Knock it off.

I really wish you well. Unfortunately that bitterness you harbor is eating you alive.

thanx for admitting you posted a list that I have not read, yet you bill it as such.

Since you admit to the duplicity of your posts, there's no reason to go any further.

I addressed the incorrectness of your comment and anyone who thinks they know the actual percentage of any group which commits child molestation is ignorant and spreading false information. Most of the people here who quote these numbers need a stat and research methods course.

As usual you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Fraternal birth order and sexual orientation in pedophiles.

Note to self, second link title should be "Birth order in homosexual versus heterosexual sex offenders against children, pubescents, and adults."

Priests take a vow of chastity/abstenance. So it doesn't really matter which sex he is sexually attracted to, it's supposed to be hands-off.

This precisely the thinking that got the American Catholics in big trouble.

Very well said. True. I agree. A lot of heteros/breeders/straight dudes were deliberately excluded from Holy Orders by the inverts since 1980. Ratzinger is right on.

Great links. Thanks. Here's another link:

Careful Selection And Training Of Candidates For... Sacred Orders (2 Feb., 1961).

"Advancement to religious vows and ordination should be barred to those who are afflicted with evil tendencies to homosexuality or pederasty, since for them the common life and the priestly ministry would constitute serious dangers."

Your comment shows that your conception of sexual orientation has to do only with 'functionality,' that is, which orifice is selected.

Homosexuality is a grave disorder which is manifested in a number of ways, ONE of which is homosexual activity (in some cases.)

It is erroneous to focus only on genital activity (or lack thereof.)

Ummmnnn---

Homosexual activity is 'against nature,' whereas heterosexual activity (without marriage) is sinful.

Both require absolution and repentance, or result in a personal and lengthy meeting with Beelzebub at a later date.

You're a fool. Either you never really believed in Church teaching in the first place as truth, meaning you can just shift Churches like seats at a dinner table since one's as good as another. Or you do believe the Church is/was the truth, and just because you didn't like one of those truths, you left. The former is almost excusable based on ignorance. The latter is inexcusable based on arrogance and selfishness.

BTW, here's what Jesus had to say on adultery. Go take it up with Him in the afterlife. I'm sure he'll come around to your way of thinking:

"But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

I'm just applying my concept to this particular situation--a population that is supposed to be essentially asexual. What way other than functionality can somebody be judged who has supposedly taken a vow of celibacy and shuns all sexual activity?

My conception of homosexuality would be completely different if it were aimed at the general population.

KJeep the Third World actually Catholic priests. Let them appoint new parish councils. If anyone objects, the Church door swings both ways. It isn't as though we claimed to be a democracy rather than a Church.
