I Will Rebuild With You, Mr. President
By Donna Brazile
On Thursday night President Bush spoke to the nation from my city. I am not a Republican. I did not vote for George W. Bush -- in fact, I worked pretty hard against him in 2000 and 2004. But on Thursday night, after watching him speak from the heart, I could not have been prouder of the president and the plan he outlined to empower those who lost everything and to rebuild the Gulf Coast...
I know, maybe better than anyone, that there are times when it seems that our nation is too divided ever to heal. There are times when we feel so different from each other that we can hardly believe that we are all part of the same family. But we are one nation. We are a family. And this is what we do. When the president asked us to pitch in Thursday night, he wasn't really asking us to do anything spectacular. He was asking us to be Americans, and to do what Americans always do...
Mr. President, I am ready for duty. I am ready to stir those old pots again. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.
The writer, a Democratic political consultant, managed Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign.

eh....20 points.
I missed that - do you have a link... ?
This certainly needs to be shouted from the rooftops:
"[Bush] enunciated something that we all need to remember: This is America. We are not immune to tragedy here ... ."
Probably opportunism, but also indication that the Dem Party is crumbling. The press and the Dems once again overplayed their hand and damaged their credibility. And each time they do that, they get more and more shrill. It's fun to watch.
C'mon. If you didn't like it, say so. This is the 'Net. You don't want people to think that you are niggardly handing out points.
I forget the substance of the thread..... she called me "sweetheart." ahhhh........
Watch it. It's words like yours, said in a lighthearted manner, that forced good posters like mhking and rdb3 off the board.
What is absolutely clear to me is that some people on this board believe every Democrat is a scorched Earth Ted Kennedy type. You couldn't be more wrong if that is the belief you hold.
Donna Brazille is among the Liberal Democrats that has not relinquished control to Jesse Jackson or Moveon.org. She is a smart strategist, well connected to the ground of the black community. A political activist, as I assume everyone is if they frequent this board, is a fool if they ignore what she says.
Since the 2004 election she has been raising a storm, or attempting to, about the inroads Republicans are making into the black community. She saw how the vote for G.W. doubled in key swing states among the black population. She is concerned this serious undertaking to break the monopoly of the vote will be effective this time, and she has cited strong efforts by Mehlman and the President to reach out. She has been raising the red flag to her own Party to start taking them seriously.
We now have this column where she expresses allegiance with the President to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. There may be sincerity in the proposal, but I guarentee this column is driven by a rough assessment of the politics.
1) The Republicans are the Majority. The President is a Republican. The Gulf Coast WILL be rebuilt. Credit will go to Republicans, and therefore, some good will from the black community in all probability. Democrats will be fools to distance themselves in this rebuilding as the opposition. She understands this. They need to be able to claim some credit.
2) The president's proposals, despite some harping about money, are actually largely conservative in nature. The Democrats obstruct, then they have no ability to attempt to derail conservative policies that WILL in the long term lead to higher prosperity and initiative in the black community. Those that are less reliant on government, tend to vote Republican. Democrats know this as well.
For the same reason they fear private accounts destroying FDR's Great Society, they fear Bush's proposals doing the same and NEED to be on the inside to attempt to derail them.
I don't know if all President's get a rise in poll numbers, but I know that this President almost always does when he is allowed to speak to the American people unfiltered by the press. This is why they rarely let him speak, are quick to cut him off, and creatively slice and edit soundbites to reflect him in worst light possible. It's very hard to dislike G.W.B. as himself.
Translation: I can't think of any good partisan swipes to send your way, so I'll play for time.
Actually, I think she was quite sincere. Bush was sincere, and full of good ideas, and I think that it resonated with the few honest Dems still out there.
I would love to see more Dems take this position. They have been like crazed attack chihuahuas at the throat of Bush since the beginning. They achieve nothing, but they're a nuisance and make a lot of noise.
Maybe they should actually go back to thinking about the country they claim to love and do something positive. I think Donna Brazile wants to do this, and I think we all have to remember that this is our country we are talking about and we cannot let partisan politics bring it down. Because that's the only thing that can.
Suck-up.
(Am I allowed to say that?)
It could be damage control for Donna Brazile in Democrat campaign circles. Last thing I heard about her was when Kerry canned her. Her former boss is toast no matter what he says or does.
She's in Hillary B. Clinton's camp now, I suppose.
---Mr. President, I am ready for duty. I am ready to stir those old pots again. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.---
(I am taking my place at the head of the line for the money pipeline. I'll be carrying on and grabbing with both hands, so don't get in my way.)
You are asking her to do the very thing you are accusing her of doing.
HELP HER FAMILY.....
That is how they got on welfare, and she would only be changing their source of welfare if she did.
THEY have to get themselves off welfare. She cannot do it for them. That is welfare.
Must read garbage...
I guess you don't remember all the garbage this woman has said the past two elections. And she will do it again in 2008.
I think that she, like the female evacuee from the DOME who was interviewed by the MSM, GOT FAITH.
And too many times, the changes are negative.
