Bright says it's a sound concepts for people to protect themselves since the criminal justice system is not working. Despite criticism, Bright says he will not budge from his stance.
The mayor says he is not promoting vigilante justice but is in favor of people protecting themselves and their property Bright's comments have drawn mixed reaction from Montgomery residents.
Some say his suggestion is an outrageous response to the area's crime rate http://www.wtvm.com/Global/story.asp?S=3859734&nav=8fapecAQ
"In my opinion, people need to buy a weapon, buy a gun, ed-
ucate themselves on how to use that gun and they need to use that weapon to protect themselves from the criminal element out there," he said Thursday.
"I will not back away from that concept. It is a sensitive issue. It is simply me as the mayor wanting and caring enough about our citizens here to tell them this may be the best way they can help us protect themselves."
Bright said he will not budge from his stance.

"What we need to do... Is there any media? Chief, can I say this? I've said it one time
Get a gun and teach our folks how to use them and shoot' em," Bright said. "Now, I'm telling you, that's what we need to do."
PING!
Calling him unapologetic implies that he should apologize. More bias from AP...
an armed society is a polite society... that is the long and short of it...
If so, then we need to oppose this vigorously.
That way, they'll figure they HAVE to pass it, and we're in!
Brilliant, yes?

Good for that Mayor,I agree with him about everyone owning a gun,I do and know how to use it..I was fortunate I had a brother that started teaching me about guns when I was twelve yrs old..He was a constable in a small town in Texas..When I took my test for my license to carry I made a 92 on the written test and made almost a perfect score when I did the firing range..Just buy a gun get comfortable with it and by all means keep it clean...I don't know if I should say this but my teacher an ex- police officer told me if I every come in contact with anyone that is going to do me harm, make sure I shoot to kill..If I don't they will come back and sue the living shit out of me..that is what he said not me...
How dare he make such a racist remark, dosen't he know we have open housing laws in this country.
Out of the mouths of babes......
I love a Mayor with common sense. The fiasco in New Orleans demonstrated that you can't always count on the police to be there for you.
Give that man a raise and re-elect him.
Mayor Bright is being honest - how refreshing.
As for the Chief, I think most LEO's feel this way despite the characterization they are getting as "gun-grabbing" in NO.
I think I'll write him a letter of support.
He's right, of course.

instead of "unaware" as reported, this intelligent mayor knew full well that his message would ge out even though it would be distorted by the anti-Anerica news media - politicinas, lawyers, and their masters.
Young Black males.
"Mayor Bobby Bright offered a crime solution that has stunned the city of Montgomery and the nation."
The nation is stunned? Where did that come from? Did the 'reporter' have a gut feeling?
I swear. And what is wrong with this?
Finally! Someone named "Bright" who actually is!
No offense, Madelyn...
