MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- While unaware he was being recorded at a civic meeting, Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright offered a crime solution that has stunned the city of Montgomery and the nation.
"What we need to do... Is there any media? Chief, can I say this? I've said it one time Get a gun and teach our folks how to use them and shoot' em," Bright said. "Now, I'm telling you, that's what we need to do."
Bright was speaking on the issues of having an understaffed police force, clogged courts and a vast majority of crime in Montgomery committed by the same relatively small number of people over and over again.
"That's the only thing that we can really tell our folks to do at this point in time," Bright said. "If there's anything else that you know that the chief and I can do to keep this crime down, keep these guys from stealing... let me know."
The Montgomery Police Department was asked what their response was to the mayor's statements.
"The mayor made some good points. If a person chooses to own a handgun, then we think it is important they know how to use that handgun and they know when the law allows them to use it," said Lt. Huey Thornton of the Montgomery Police Department.
So far, Bright has not commented on his statements.

In any population segment, the criminal class is going to be a relatively small subset. It HAS TO BE a small sub-segment, for the same reason that predators must be relatively few compared to the number of prey -- because otherwise you run out of prey
Somebody who is supporting himself thru robbery must commit a LOT of robberies per week. What's the average take per robbery? How much money, on average, does anybody here have on him when walking the street?
I would figure the average mugging would net $50, and the average convenience store holdup maybe $200. That's not enough to support a drug habit and get female companionship unless the guy is doing at least one or two robberies per day. If a career criminal is permanently removed from the environment, that's a reduction of hundreds of crimes per year.
The judges can refuse to incarcerate or execute a criminal, but it's real hard for a judge to FORCE a police department to arrest a homeowner for shooting a criminal, if the police and prosecutors just decide to not persue such cases
I feel that a person who is anti-gun should have a sign in their front lawn announcing "THIS HOUSE IS GUN FREE".
As an Alabamaian, born and raised, this isn't something he needs to tell his citizens. Everybody I know owns a gun. It's just common sense around here that if you break in somebody's house, you are probably going to get shot with no apologies.
This can be an incredibly bad idea in some locations -- like if your "warning" shot goes THRU your sheetrock and vinyl siding and into your neighbor's kids bedroom.
Handgun ammo is more penetrating than most people realize, rifle ammo much more so
Mayor bright is a Democrat, but he is by no means a liberal, he is more along the lines of a Zell Miller Democrat.
I voted for Mayor Folmar, but have been happy to see that Bobby has been consistently moving more to the right the longer he is faced with the daily running of the city and the pleas of the entitlement class.
He still has his moments, he has raised the sales tax 2 cents, has proposed numurous property tax and ad valorum tax increases etc., and he had is famous national TV moment during the DC Sniper case when he said that "Our hearts go out to the people of New England during this time of fear" LOL.
But he is also leading a revitalization of downtown Montgomery, Is presiding over an unprecedented housing boom and expansion of the city, he has brought AA Baseball to montgomery, and he has reversed Mayor Folmars archaic edict that no "Drug using musicians" would ever be allowed to hold a concert in Montgomery
The gun statement pleasantly surprised me -- but what surprised me more is that there has not been any howls of protest out of the usual suspects (Joe Reed, Alvin Holmes, etc etc). Had MAyor Folmar made this comment the Liberal Rag Montgomery advertiser and the race Baiters mentioned above would have been howling to the high heavens.
"Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright is unapologetic and stands firm behind comments he made this week..."
Great! Outstanding!
"..stunned the city..."
hogwash
"..stunned the looney leftists in the city..."
This makes 100% sense the only people "stunned" are the pro-leftist-government loonies of the National Democrats.
LOL. The nation is stunned that someone would suggest it's a good idea to arm yourself, yet the reaction to the unfolding events of Katrina have sent gun sales through the roof.
Ah, the smell of vigilante justice. That's my kinda fragrance.
I've never heard the warning shot recommendation. Shoot to kill - yes, but not one in the ceiling.
I live on the country and have no neighbors within a few miles..The thing is here you have to fire a warning shot..I do know what you are talking about though..I see rattlers a lot on my sidewalk near the pond I don't shoot them because I know the bullet could be dangerous to me if it happened to ricochet or break the concrete up and come up into my face....I usually use a hoe and chop their heads off..That is if they are not curled up..that is the sticking position..
That was what I was told..And I have a very good memory..
That would be the local chapter of the International Amalgamated Looters, Rapists, Muggers, and Thugs (IALRM&T).
