WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is pressuring the Senate Judiciary Committee to close to the public next week's hearings on a former secret military intelligence unit called "Able Danger," two congressional sources have confirmed to FOX News.

Witnesses from the Pentagon are expected to testify at that hearing; that's why they want it classified. FOX News has learned that committee Chairman Arlen Specter's office is vigorously resisting the request.

Some former Able Danger analysts and Rep. Curt Weldon (search) say the formerly clandestine intelligence unit identified Mohammed Atta (search) and three other of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers one year before the attacks that left over 3,000 people dead. They also claim that their repeated requests to turn over the information to the FBI were ignored.

Weldon said a former Army officer will testify next week that he was also ordered to destroy data that included reference to Atta.

"In the summer of 2000, he was ordered and, or, he would go to jail if he didn't comply," the Pennsylvania Republican said. "He was ordered to destroy 2.5 terabytes of data specific to Able Danger, the Brooklyn [terror] cell and Mohammad Atta. He will name the person who ordered him to destroy that material."

I don't mind the ping.

I suspect theres some mutual butt coverin going on. I know that pure partisans won't like it but Ive been around long enough to know that few things are strictly democrat or strictly republican in matters of CIA, FBI, and pentagon.

Will anyone top Hildabeast's 127 uses of "I don't recall" and "I can't remember" when she testified?

CYA = SOP.

Lemme get this straight, the Dems want a complete and through investigation of who is to blame (read this GW administration) but they are resisting having a through investigation into whether some administration (insert Clintons name here) screwed up with intell on the lead terrorist of the 911 hijacking?

Absolutely.
He was real busy with Monica, Jennifer, and so many other names I can't remember them all. Bubba never met a chick he couldn't get interested in or a major issue he couldn't duck out of.

"its not their identities they want hidden - its what they have to say."

I can side with what you said. This investigation would be better served in private sessions if Specter (I wrote a long appeal to him to truly delve into it with all fairness, that he had nothing to lose), and really get to the bottom of it.
Sections could be taped for future public discloser. Need we have to be reminded that we only where able to download a public version of the 9/11 commission report.
In private all can be much more candid as to what is brought forth. If you go totally public, then it goes back to frigen political grandstanding and more CYA then in a well orchestrated private investigation. The goal after all based on what Curt has said all along is to get to the bottom of where the failures where, and not neccesarily to place fingers on individuals. If many things where not allowed to be open to a public forum style investigation, what good is that in the long run.

Who at the Pentagon outside of the SecDef's office would have the horsepower to think they could change the agenda of the Senate on this matter?

Put the "Kennedy Rape Victim Blue Dot" on their face.
Besides, we all know the person who ordered the shredding is involved with the Berger shred.
We just want to know why he got the slap on the wrist for protecting the person who ordered the shred.

Why the coverup? I thought there was no such thing as Able Danger. Nothing to fear, so let's leave these hearings open. It will be interesting to see how hard the media try to get access.

Specter must mistakenly believe this has to do with the current administration.
Otherwise, ole Teddy would lean on him hard - or maybe, Teddy is encouraging him to fight the censorship? He does hate the Clintons......

You know they did.
Remember the Pumpkin Papers?
One does not go into high levels of security and military without knowing to CYA.
This is going to be high drama.
Just watch.

Remember not just anyone can order the distruction of classified material.....Only a few have that power....If I were telling all, I'd want as much protection as I could get.
