WASHINGTON The Pentagon is pressuring the Senate Judiciary Committee to close to the public next week's hearings on a former secret military intelligence unit called "Able Danger," two congressional sources have confirmed to FOX News.
Witnesses from the Pentagon are expected to testify at that hearing; that's why they want it classified. FOX News has learned that committee Chairman Arlen Specter's office is vigorously resisting the request.
Some former Able Danger analysts and Rep. Curt Weldon (search) say the formerly clandestine intelligence unit identified Mohammed Atta (search) and three other of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers one year before the attacks that left over 3,000 people dead. They also claim that their repeated requests to turn over the information to the FBI were ignored.
Weldon said a former Army officer will testify next week that he was also ordered to destroy data that included reference to Atta.
"In the summer of 2000, he was ordered and, or, he would go to jail if he didn't comply," the Pennsylvania Republican said. "He was ordered to destroy 2.5 terabytes of data specific to Able Danger, the Brooklyn [terror] cell and Mohammad Atta. He will name the person who ordered him to destroy that material."

Believe it or not, Specter has already told the Pentagon to screw off. The hearings will be held in public.
Scary to think that Hillary and bubba stack the deck every chance they get while GW sits back and plays it basicaly straight.
It's fine to use an ex president in some tasks, but helping keep Hillary afloat is not good. Especially after the rancid, irresponsible things she has said about W!!
Boy I hope you are right. We need some light in here.
You got it - election 2000, and the "terrorists are criminals in need of courts crowd" and the "any Saudi traveler is a good Saudi" crowd had just been told their "everthing is wonderful" policies had dumped an Al Queda cell right into Brooklyn NY; what was Gore to do!!!!!!
The line of questioning by congress must ask, "who did you tell" all the way up to the DOD lawyer that told the Whitehouse and then told everyone else to shut it down on the Whitehouse orders - from Sandy Berger maybe?
Biggest story of the year....swept under the rug.
I sure do hope somebody maintained something of those files, at least who was in charge and who was giving the orders.
True. He's darn savvy. But I think it's traditional that presidents protect ex presidents. Then again, Carter and to lesser extent Clinton, have thrown mud at GW.
Yes, it has. There is not a solid reason why this testimony should be classified other than to create a coverup.
Screw them. The entire nation wanted a complete investigation, and this is part of it. Too bad if someone might get in trouble. That's the way it goes.
What ever happened to the peoples right to know what allowed 9/11 to happen? Wasn't that the intent of all these investigations? Why stop now that were getting to the bottom of it?
It's the truth isn't it......;^)
I am pinging you because this topic is of interest to most or all on the TS Show thread. I apologize if it is an intrusion.
The political class, all protect each other ... that's the way it works in the Beltway ... Sad but true ...
If Specter were to do one truly honorable and patriotic thing in his life, it would be to get the truth out here, now.
From my standpoint if I was an ex-President(Bush 41) probably the last person in the world I would want to be around would be someone who lied his way into office at my expense.
I clearly don't get it but this won't be the first time I wind up lost in politics 688 at the highest level there is.
