NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday opposed John Roberts' nomination to be U.S. Supreme Court chief justice, making him the first noted Republican to break with the Bush administration over who should lead America's top court.

Bloomberg, a former Democrat seeking re-election in a heavily Democratic city, said Roberts had failed to show a commitment to upholding the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision establishing a right to abortion.
"I am unconvinced that Judge Roberts accepts the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling as settled law," Bloomberg said.
Roberts' answers to questions in Senate confirmation hearings "did not indicate a commitment to protect a woman's right to choose," he said. "For that reason I oppose the nomination of Judge Roberts as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court."
While Bloomberg's statement is unusual from a Republican, the mayor has no standing over whether Roberts will be confirmed by the U.S. Senate as chief justice.
Bloomberg, who became a billionaire by building the media company named after him, is ahead in polls in the New York mayoral race ahead of November's election here.
Like many Republicans in New York, Bloomberg has long been a liberal on social issues and has been unafraid to publicly break with President George W. Bush.
Right to choose what?
This is Bloomie just shoring up his re-election bid. NY State is very abortion-happy, clocking in I think at around 100,000 to 110,000 abortions a year. That's NYC's sentiment.
I think it's unfair that I don't have a band of singing dwarves to wake me up in the morning. "Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to work we go..."
I am really disappointed that the discussion was allowed to be defined by the left. The real question should be "Judge Roberts, which has a greater legal imperative; the constitution or case law?" The obvious answer is the constitution and questions regarding Roe v Wade and other pending cases can be answered without being specifically addressed.
On Wednesday a state fact finding board gave Bloomie 90% of what he wanted in his dispute with my incompetent, red diapered, totally out of date UFT teachers union. But 90% is not enough so he won't even consider accepting the findings. He can't let it go and he knows that there will be some backlash on election day cutting into his margin, so he goes nuts over abortion which the red diapered affluent west siders and denizens of Brooklyn Heights and Forest Hills think is the most important thing in creation. Presto back comes his 75% margin of victory.
Specter is a RINO, Tedddy and Dean are Moonbat Dems, Bloomie is indescribable.
"Well, I'm against Bloomberg using up air that could be better used elsewhere. But that's not going to change anytime soon either."
He did this for one reason only. So that he can look as liberal as Ferrar. He took the only thing Ferrar has to run on and took it out of play.
Bloomberg isn't a liberal, but he is a RINO. And the question is, would you rather have Bollomberg there or Ferrar. I would rather have Bloomberg.
There is no right to smoke in the constitution.
Un-freakin-believable. As they say... thanks a lot Bloomberg, for making it OK to hate New York again.
and arasina opposes Bloomberg.
The results were about the same.
I also don't think it's fair that Jupiter should have as many moons as it does.
LOL! You're good.
What a RINO. But how pathetic is the demonicratic party anyway. The central core of that party, their most cherished belief which truly defines a democrat is the destruction of an unborn human being. How utterly evil.
Bloomberg's not really a Republican to begin with, so why should anyone care what he thinks?
First, it means nothing that a Liberal Democrat Mayor up for re-election opposes Roberts.
Seconds, He IS a Liberal Democrat.
He is not a RINO in any sense. He used Republican primaries to be noticed. The RNC in N.Y. should be ashamed they've allowed it, but his alligiance was never with Republicans.
The press can play cute in acting as though they don't know that, but the voters knew it and it is why he'll be re-elected in N.Y.C. without any stress.
Does anyone outside of NYC really care what Bloomingidiot thinks or says-he is still just a liberal in conservative disguise.
This is stunning development! Has Roberts announced his withdrawl yet? They'll be up late at the White House tonight!
"Un-freakin-believable. As they say... thanks a lot Bloomberg, for making it OK to hate New York again."
He is Ed Koch without the personality.
Who gives a rat's behind what Bloomberg thinks about Roberts? Just another politician thinking his stupid opinion is really important.
Hey lets not judge him...I guess he just thinks its important for his grandkids to be able to get abortions.
