NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday opposed John Roberts' nomination to be U.S. Supreme Court chief justice, making him the first noted Republican to break with the Bush administration over who should lead America's top court.
Bloomberg, a former Democrat seeking re-election in a heavily Democratic city, said Roberts had failed to show a commitment to upholding the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision establishing a right to abortion.
"I am unconvinced that Judge Roberts accepts the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling as settled law," Bloomberg said.
Roberts' answers to questions in Senate confirmation hearings "did not indicate a commitment to protect a woman's right to choose," he said. "For that reason I oppose the nomination of Judge Roberts as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court."
While Bloomberg's statement is unusual from a Republican, the mayor has no standing over whether Roberts will be confirmed by the U.S. Senate as chief justice.
Bloomberg, who became a billionaire by building the media company named after him, is ahead in polls in the New York mayoral race ahead of November's election here.
Like many Republicans in New York, Bloomberg has long been a liberal on social issues and has been unafraid to publicly break with President George W. Bush.

This is just incredible. Bloomberg was a RAT until just before the NYC mayoral race in 2001 and switched parties. It stretches credulity that this sack of sh!t can call himself a Republican. Bloomberg sets the bar for "RINO."

Uh, Bloomberg - last I checked, the Mayor of New York does not vote to confirm a United States Supreme Court Chief Justice.
But seeing how you believe your royal powers to be unchecked, I can understand why you think your opinion matters on this...

He's still a Democrat. Anyway...I will never understand why killing unborn children is so stinking important to Democrats (and some Republicans). How do you work up such passion for such an awful thing?

He's a multimillionaire who wanted to play "Mayor" for a few years and the people of NYC let him.
Who cares what he thinks !

Well, I'm against Bloomberg using up air that could be better used elsewhere. But that's not going to change anytime soon either.

I was ardently opposed to tropical storm Katrina becoming a hurricane and making landfall.
The results were about the same.
I also don't think it's fair that Jupiter should have as many moons as it does.

The mayor or New York's opinion of John Robert s's nomination to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court means absolutely nothing.
In his heart of hearts people like Bloom berg, who have spent their political life trying to tear down the only nation on Earth that would reward such a man with so much for so little, hates Americans.

Because it's the only example they can point to of their ideology offering people more "freedom" or "self-determination".
Someone should ask the Mayor if the idea that people have a right to smoke in public is "settled law".

It seems that the hard left -- of which Bloomberg is clearly a part -- is attempting to make the Roberts confirmation a vote on abortion. They will defeat Roberts if they are successful in making this a "Yes/No" vote on abortion. There are not enough politicians in the Senate of good character willing to confront the issue.
I do not think they will be successful and I believe Roberts will be easily confirmed.

Swimming upstream on this one, isn't he? Not that any serious challenge to Judge Roberts is coming from the mayor of even the richest city in America.

Why is the fact that Mr. Bloomberg feels the way he does newsworthy?
I am a mere village trustee and I feel Roberts to be the best we could possibly get for CJSC. The man is brilliant!!!!
I rather doubt that my feelings will make any news release however.

The thing about it is that it isn't even supposed to be in Congress's power to figure out how a Justice would vote
on a matter that could come before the court.
These people who bring up Abortion as a litmus do not understand the Constitution and should be removed from office for it.
