WRONG, Mr. President. "THAT" poverty had its roots in LBJ's doings. Over $30 TRILLION has been spent since then. There is no connection to the New Orleans poverty of today and slavery/discrimination of over 100 years ago.

Wrong, it goes back further than that. LBJ is just part of a much larger problem. By default, he was a racist. (if you ever listened to his taped White House phone conversations).

Now you've ventured off into Looneyville with this:

I know what "Bold Action" is when President Bush said that in the context of that transcript. "Bold Action" is welfare piled on top welfare.

Your solution to the problem is to completely ignore them and throw them to the wind, like the Democrats have been doing for 60 years. Tell me, where in the speech does it say "building minority owned businesses" and "leaving most of the work to the private sector" is considered "welfare"? By all estimations, this rebuilding effort will be entirely done in the private sector. (read: your tax dollars and mine won't be raised).

OH, yes ma'am...I surely do know that.

Your "BRAVO/BRAVAs" are few and far between,
and they are given only to the deserving few.

Good to see you. ;o)

I'd feel much better if he would call for an immediate re-writing of the "transportation" bill; this time without the near $30 billion in vote-buying pork.

Forget it. Bush and The Republicans have made it very, very clear that they don't give a damn about safeguarding your money. Or mine.

$500 Billion deficits, $3 Trillion budgets - here we come! Crank the Louisiana Corruption Machine up to high gear!

Whee.

We've been doing that for around 40 years now....largest peacetime transfer of wealth in history

The big and long term picture here is to get people off welfare and onto the tax rolls.

----It's obviously too early to say with certainty, but I'm hopeful that the future is brighter for many residents of NO now than it has ever been.----

It is, for the ones who are getting out of this state. And that's the sad thing as far as N.O. is concerned; why would you want to rebuild it? I encounter these refugees every day and the most common thing I hear is how much they're looking forward to starting life elsewhere. They KNOW what they've escaped from and don't want to go back.

Louisiana is a bad, bad, bad investment risk. I can't stress that enough.

I'm a minority and I never received a downpayment from the government to purchase my home. I earned my home--I earned my downpayment.

Did you ever have everything you owned pulvarized into mulch by a hurricane?

Only people with ambition and drive will want to start businesses. If well managed, this will lead to people who have never taken responsibility for themselves, beginning to do so.

I don't see why you should have a problem with that.

As for having Congress cut other spending to make up for this, I am in total agreement with you. I hope he demands other cuts (though I'm not too hopeful of that). It's one of the areas where I have serious disagreements with the President.

I didn't see the speech either, and from reading some of the threads after it was over, I thought the President must have been calling Laura Lady Bird!

Thankfully, somebody posted the transcript and as usual, I found out the usual misrepresentations had been posted here that have become the norm. I thought what he said was great. Some here are obviously very selfish, and very incognito if you know what I mean! ;-)

LOL And CNN is still talking about the people who were hungry and thirsty in the Superdome.

But this is a lie! There were tractor trailers full of food and water delivered there BEFORE the storm and often there after. I have seen pictures of the trash left behind when they left. There were CASES of full water bottles and MREs laying on the ground.

Precisely...."W" is making this into an opportunity to go from welfare to work....It worked in Indiana and it will work in LA too.

Regarding fiscal matters and the growth of government, I agree with your post entiely. Well done.

But don't you see President Bush as being socially conservative?

I really think this has reinvigorated his presidency

Just as all of the national media had pronounced it over. Funny how they keep falling into the same trap.

Some of these folks live to complain, Mike. It's all they know how to do.

Now, I've spent quite enough time on this thread, so I'm heading out. It's in good hands with you, anyway. :)

GREAT speech by a GREAT President!
