Floodgate May Have Thwarted Storm Tragedy
FOX NEWS ^ | September 14, 2005

Hours after Hurricane Katrina (search) passed, New Orleans was underwater. Some experts say the flooding could have been stopped a quarter-century ago — had environmentalists not interfered.

In 1965, after Hurricane Betsy (search), President Lyndon Johnson authorized the Army Corps of Engineers to build two floodgates at the mouth of Lake Pontchartrain (search). Simulations showed a Category 3 hurricane could raise the water level in the lake by as many as 12 feet, potentially overwhelming the levees and flooding the city — just as Katrina did more than two weeks ago.

The Army spent millions planning the project — until it was stopped by an environmental group called Save Our Wetlands, which filed a lawsuit arguing that the floodgates would damage sensitive marine life.

But the flood in New Orleans didnt threaten any marine life. All that human sewage and chemicals from refineries and gasoline on those abandoned cars, that didnt hurt the environment at all. Envirowhackos can only see the tip of their nose they cant see the big picture.

NO! It was stopped by legislators who let enviornmental extremists dictate laws without regard to consequences and by judges who listen to the whacko enviornmentalists who have no regard for anything other than their distorted views. The Save Our Wetlands weirdos just took advantage of the fools who let us all down.

BZZZZZT! WE HAVE A LOSER.

That't not the scenario that happened. It was multiple breaches of levies. From the force of wind and water over and in Lake Pontchartrain. Those "gates" to the ocean would have done nothing.

The gates would have kept the surge from entering the lake in the first place.

Katrina first pushed water from the ocean into Ponchatrain as it approached (winds out of the ESE), and then pushed that water down into NOLA as it passed to the east and the winds shifted out of the North.

Hmm, I'll have to check that out. I thought the Lake overflow into East NO was from winds out of the WNW, west side of the eye, water from off the lake.

You have to remember the levees were only built to withstand a cat 3 hurricane

The blonde should have been Mary Landrieu... :-)

P.S. Is there a photoshop "compilation" thread for these? I've seen different ones, hit or miss (I.e., Blanco "Wave to the floater", Nagin w/ various bus scenarios). It'd be great if they were compiled on a special thread...

Not that I'm aware of- and it would be a good idea, some of the graphics I've seen here & there are cutting and funny.
