HUNTSVILLE -- A woman sentenced to die for the fatal shootings of her husband and their two children some 18-years ago was executed Wednesday evening.
Frances Newton is the third woman and first black woman executed since Texas resumed capital punishment. Her execution is the 13th this year in Texas.
The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the execution when justices rejected appeals that could have kept her from becoming the third woman executed in the state since the Civil War, and the first black woman.
Without dissent, the high court declined a pair of appeals about an hour before Newton was scheduled to be taken to the Texas death chamber.

You'd have to thank your local ABA for that one.
Why is her race important and/or relevant?
They still protest every time with their sign "Stop Executions". About 6-8 were out tonight.
only 13 so far? We need to put in that express lane....
God forgives.....you still owe the State.
I'm afraid I'm not upping my sympathy scale around here today.
That execution was another sorry act of stupidity, waste of good taxpayer money, and, worst of all, hybris.
Stupidity, because we have no rational reason to kill people we could as well put behind bars as long as necessary,
Waste, because even the most sorry and lacking attempt to make sure we don't err in killing people results in that absurdous pomposity called death penalty process right now - it's waaay cheaper to just keep people in prison,
And worst of all, hybris. Because basically, we play God here. God alone is the source of ultimate justice, and He alone posesses ultimate Wisdom, and both of those we claim to possess when committing this one unspeakable and irreversible act of taking away a human life.
Killing brings out all the worst instincts in us, and with each such act that is done in our name we lose a little of our humanity, of our kindness and our grace.
Count me in as a convinced Catholic on this....
Genesis 9:6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man."
I respectfully disagree. With every execution of murdering scum the air that we breath becomes a little cleaner. It is no longer polluted by their breath.
With every execution of murdering scum the sun shines a little brighter, the sky is a little bluer. And humanity advances a step towards perfect peace.
DOH! That is not what I meant. All Texas Executions are in Huntsville.
The protest was in College Station. As was my middle-finger salute to the old hippies. :)
Texans are a peaceable lot. We live and love just like you do. Many of us are Catholics too.
Texas now has life without parole, which will likely be used as much or more than the death penalty.
But, up until this year, a killer was eligible for parole after 30 years. That's why DAs pursued the death penalty, so that people like this child killer wouldn't be sitting in a McDonald's in 15 years, eating french fries, free as a bird.
That is 'hubris'.
If you wish to use latin or greek to amplfy your point you should spell it correctly.
DOH, yourself, I'm a Texan too. I know where executions are held, I just read it funny and got a big laugh out of it.
That would work if the statistics were flipped.
for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
I remember that bad actress. Larry King gave her plenty of airtime when he still could claim an audience.
Darn, guess the "Take a number" machine has to be replaced again.
She's dead, Jim.
Shouldn't that be phrased, "the War of Northern Aggression?"
You need to lighten up on those drugs.
