Bookmarking this thread for a refuge I have known and loved as a Floridian. What a fine tribute to such an endearing place as St. Augustine! Many thanks for sharing.

Great post! I visit my son who lives in Melbourne fairly often, I get off I-95 at St. Augustine--one of my favorite cities--and mosey down A1A the rest of the way. I always stop at the Castillo. It gets better each time.

I slept soundly for 7 1/2 hours, stirring briefly at 7 - a record for the past 2 years.

That's wonderful news! You must be feeling pretty good today.

Glad you like the pledge, the 2nd graphic is a painting of the lighthouse in St. Augustine that I modified just a little. :)

"I wonder how many of the Indian prisoners survived when it was a prison."

That use of the prison at The Fort was another regrettable black mark on our nation's history, in my opinion.

I always felt the Native American Indians were tragic victims of our voracious appetite for land and growth.
We achieved "Euro West" - wide open spaces and waving fields of grain, steadily erasing one of their important food sources, buffalo herds; and coralling/slaughtering the tribes in our path who had long owned and roamed the lands.

The "we were only retaliating for the murder of our settlers" does not fly - the first scalp, it is said, was lifted by a white man, and they of course struck back; even if not so, they defended THEIR lands for all the right reasons.
WE were the interlopers and steadily encroaching and invading conquerors - not the Indians.

The Indians in New England welcomed the Pigrims and helped them - Manhattan was sold to them...fine.

But what about the "from sea to shining sea?" part that we justify?

While we love and enjoy the outcome, it came at a terrible cost to others; and we often still relagate them to Fourth Class Citizens status...

[Disclaimer - I do not have any Native American blood - just a passion for right and justice]

I'm so glad you enjoyed your few hours of flyby to this lovely step back in history, Luvvy!!

Figured out the wonderful French bakery on St. George Street I had so heartily endorsed must have closed and was replaced with another enterprise.
Realized the owner lady then was already elderly - time and changes march on, and she probably sold it.

[have never had anywhere such great Napoleans since then]

You are so fortunate to get to visit that area so often. Maybe the fort will have an even more special meaning on your next visit now that you know the extensive history behind it.

I recall being fascinated as a child (growing up in NYC) when I learned that St. Augustine was our 'oldest city. I wanted to visit it! And I did fulfill that dream about 7 years ago.

Now your wonderful account of its history & beauty has inspired me to go again!

BRAVO BUMP.......for a beautiful & inspiring thread!

Anger Or Applause?

Read:
Jonah 3:10-4:11

Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented. —Jonah 3:10

Bible In One Year: Ezekiel 12-14

cover How do we react when God shows mercy to people we think deserve punishment? If we are resentful, it may indicate that we have forgotten how much the Lord has forgiven us.

After Jonah followed God's second call to preach His coming judgment on Nineveh (Jonah 3:1-4), the people of the city turned from their evil lifestyle, so the Lord did not destroy them (v.10). God's mercy made Jonah angry. He told God he had been afraid this would happen, and that's why he fled to Tarshish in the first place. "I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, . . . One who relents from doing harm" (4:2).

But the Lord said to Jonah, "Should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons?" (4:11).

God's marvelous grace is greater than all our sin. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8). Because of His grace to us, we should "be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave [us]" (4:32).

Instead of being angry when God is merciful, we should applaud. —David McCasland

What love the Father has bestowed on me!
For this I cannot help but thankful be;
I read His Word, His promises embrace,
And daily praise Him for His matchless grace. —Hess

We can stop showing mercy to others when Christ stops showing mercy to us.

"While we love and enjoy the outcome, it came at a terrible cost to others"

This is undeniably true. I was saddened, when I visited Yellowstone, to hear of the violence toward the Nez Pearce peoples of the region. They were completely cleared/slaughtered even from an area where men (1) couldn't farm -- too rocky, bad soil and (2) there was plenty of wildlife for all to share.

Sometimes it wasn't even land grab, that is. Sometimes it was just violence and racism.

I always have had great appreciation for the effort it takes to ready a thread.

It could be referred to as The Agony & The Ecstasy!
You laugh a lot - cry a lot - CONFER a LOT!!

Work on the snafus - boo boos - dumb errors -
and hope it all somehow straightens up and flies right..:))

I have eaten at Seafood restaurants in St. Augustine but have never explored the old town. Was always drawn to the fort with other family members since it was the place that my mother's parents met in the early 1900's at a dance or musical event (not sure what event it was).

Things wreak of corruption and coverup, Lenny Roberto and I are putting together a lawsuit and complaint with the New York State Board of Elections.

There is NO reason all my precints have not reported yet.
#1, they could be witholding the numbers because in those numbers I am over the top and beat the endorsed candidate.

If I don't demand the numbers and concede they will leave them as is and my opponent will win.

This is how bad this county is and that is no lie or exaggeration. 3 of our other candidates have 80% of their ballots as paper and they refuse to count them till next week. A clear violation of NYState election law. They are and can be charged with a felony.

We filed a complaint with the Attorney Generals office and awaiting response from them, will they respond? Good question.

So we are taking this to the media, right now Lenny is being interviewed by channel 4 and will be on at noon.
He and I will be working on this, this afternoon.

BTW Lenny is the founder and I am the co-founder of http://www.PrimaryChallenge.org
We started the tax revolt in Erie County and they don't like it at all.
