Authorities Searching for Missing Missile Guidance Systems from Raytheon
Boston Business Journal ^ | September 13, 2005

The FBI is searching for a trailer full of Raytheon Co. precision guidance systems used to test missiles, after the equipment was stolen Sunday.

KVOA of Tucson, Ariz., reported that a thief rammed through locked gates to gain access to the parking lot where the trailer was parked. Authorities say the rig contained only missile testing equipment, rather than missile parts.

Tucson police said the trailer and adjoining building are unmarked.

"It seems like it was an opportunistic crime where somebody could have seen the trailer and decided they wanted the trailer with no thought about what was inside it," KVOA quote Tucson Police Sgt. Mark Robinson saying. "It's purely testing equipment and it has no street value whatsoever. But it has value to Raytheon and they need it back."

In separate Raytheon news, the Waltham, Mass., company told Reuters it plans to bid on a $1.7 billion contract to produce bomb-guidance systems capable of hitting moving targets.

The contract was originally won by Boeing Co., Reuters reported, but the Government Accountability Office upheld a protest by Lockheed Martin Corp. of Bethesda, Md. The GAO ruled an Air Force official improperly took a job with Boeing after awarding billions of dollars in contracts to the Chicago company.

You don't think any other country has the technology to use it? Even after the last administration?

This guidance system test equipment would be worthless (well, it would be worth the value of the scrap metal) to anyone but Raytheon.

Oh really? You steal the test equipment you steal the design of the system it was used to test, you get all the parameters the test system was measuring, which could help you replicate it or defeat it.

Why run the risk of stealing a missile when its easier to steal the design and test parameters?

Probably just small transponders for tracking the missile in flight. Not really a big deal....except to the owners.

Tracking or guiding? These were the guidance systems according to the article.

Where the heck do you get that from? It sounds like someone saw an opportunity to steal a truckload of "something" and took it. Truckloads of equipment have been going missing for decades (hell, Boeing had a bit of a scare about seven years ago when someone walked off with a truckload of its missile-testing equipment -- turned out to be the truckdriver, himself -- a middle-aged white guy).

Jeez.

Funny, we both quoted the same line, yet with very different takes. What importance do you attribute to this theft?

Perhaps because I learned to read English at a very young age.

The FBI is searching for a trailer full of Raytheon Co. precision guidance systems

The "no street value" nonsense is true, in the same way that an B1 Bomber has no street value. Joe's Pawn shop won't give you squat for it.

The fact remains that the very first paragraph says GUIDENCE SYSTEMS were stolen.

They didn't accidentally break in on these things. This was a planned, covert operation. Special forces type attack.

In fact, it struck me the other day when watching "Inside 9/11" that Al Quaida is in essense, a special forces unit specializing in SF tactics.

This is going to be a dangerous situation if we don't find those things fast.

That makes perfect sense. This guidance system test equipment would be worthless (well, it would be worth the value of the scrap metal) to anyone but Raytheon.

unless some terrorist org has obtained a guided missle and need to test it. north korea or iran come to mind first.

What a joke. The editor must have flunked Headline Writing 101:

The headline:
Authorities Searching for Missing Missile Guidance Systems from Raytheon

Sure sounds like missile parts to me.

The article:
Authorities say the rig contained only missile testing equipment, rather than missile parts.

Ooooops! I guess it wasn't really missile parts after all.

Hmmmmm trailers loaded with canned green-beans are usually equipped wit GPS transponders so that sipper can track them. But a super high tech company like Rayaton doesn't. Didn't they make a lot of money transferring info to the Chicoms?

Indeed it does look like AQ fingerprints. Worrisome.

If you only knew how difficult it is to get these things to work (with the right people) you would be less worried.

I'm not assuming that what Raytheon says was in the trailer is exactly what WAS in the trailer like you are.

When I was an undergrad, we got a presentation from an engineer that worked on the minigun. His story was he
on trip to somewhere (military, subcontractor, whatever).

He had a component in the car, and checks in to a motel, leaving the part in the trunk. The car is stolen during the night. FBI and others get involved....turns out it was just a random car theft.

But, it didn't involve ramming down a fence, either.
