I Just Called Flight 93 National Memorial
Vanity | 09-13-05 | Balding_Eagle

Posted on 09/13/2005 8:00:08 AM PDT by Balding_Eagle

I just spoke to a young man at the Office of the Superintendent of the Flight 93 National Memorial. (814) 443-4557.

There have been several threads here at FR regarding the proposed Islam Crescent at the memorial. Like the rest of you, I am appalled that such a symbol would even be considered.

I decided to do something about it. Sunday evening I faxed my objection to them in writing. It was a one page fax, and was a page printed from FR which showed the Crescent. Beside the picture I wrote my name, phone etc, and voiced my objections. The fax number is 814-443-2180.

This morning I called and spoke to the man who answered the phone. He was very professional, I was polite. I gave him my name, and then spelled it to make sure he got it right. I then said “I’m called to voice my objection to the use of the Islamic Crescent at the Flight 93 Memorial” He replied that he would make note of it and make sure that it was passed along. He then asked if there was anything more that I wanted to say. (Note to callers: RESISIT the urge to unload at this point, doing so will negate the effectiveness of your call) I said I was appalled that anyone would even consider that symbol at the memorial. I continued to say that the people responsible should be fired. He said he would pass that along also.

He then asked me for my phone number, which I gave.

Will our calls make a difference? I don’t know, but I knew NOT calling isn’t going to change things.

***Is it realy an Islamic Crescent?
The South Carolina state flag has a crescent moon AND a palm tree. I didn't believe it when I heard, and neither will you [unless you already know], anyway, click here: ***

If we're to go according to a state's logo, then the memorial should be in the shape of a keystone since that's Pennsylvania's logo.

I for one will be outraged if I find out that the artist had intended to extend an olive branch to the Islamofaschists through this design.

It really doesn't matter if it was deliberate or not. Islamic fanatics will see it as a victory. They die every day for such symbolic victories. We should not help them in their cause.

It's a beautiful design. Just horribly inappropriate.

Is it realy an Islamic Crescent?

In this particular case, IMO, yes. When questioned the 'artist' who designed the memorial said:

"This is not about any religion per se," Murdoch told the Tribune-Democrat. "It's a spiritual space, and a sacred place, but it's open to anyone."

Okay, the highlighted words are the KEY to this leftist artists crap. Not any religion per se? That means it is not necessarily representative of any religion (but could be).

But even more important is the claim "Open to anyone". Leftist speak for "we will show the Islamic world we CAAAAARRRREEEE for them by placing their symbol at one of our most sacred sites.

This is NOT a mistake, this is leftists run amock. Liberalism IS truly a mental disease. "Okay, you killed 3,000 innocent men and women so we are going to play nice".

the "Crescent of Embrace" memorial designed by Paul Murdoch Associates of Los Angeles.

Paul Murdoch has taught at USC’s School of Architecture and has been a guest critic at UCLA and Sci Arc. He has spoken extensively on the critical role of design and relationship of architecture to the environment through topics such as sustainable development, ecological urban planning, building re-use, and the poetics and practicality of recycling.

Milena Murdoch, joined Paul Murdoch Architects as Vice President in 2001, after sixteen years of professional experience as a project architect, manager and designer. She has worked with AIA Gold Medalist Richard Meier, where she was project architect for the Harold M. Williams Auditorium at the Getty Center.

With Ted Tokio Tanaka, FAIA, she served as project manager on projects including the LAX Gateway Enhancement. At Albert C. Martin & Associates, with Tim Vreeland, FAIA, Milena designed facilities for Caltech, UCLA, Whittier College and Chapman College. Milena’s prior experience also includes numerous custom homes with Franklin D. Israel. Milena Murdoch has been a registered architect in California since 1995. She graduated from University of California at Los Angeles in 1984, Summa Cum Laude, with a Master of Architecture and from Brandeis University in 1981, Summa Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Those involved in this design: Paul Murdoch Architects, Nelson Byrd Woltz, RBA Partners, Sato & Boppana, Davis Langdon, George Saxton Associates, Clayton Lee Rugh, Paulynn Cue, Aleksander Novak-Zemplinski, Design Models, Inc., Steve Payne

SlowBoat see Antoninus' post #38....with regard to our recent conversation on good/bad and contrived art. His points eloquently convey what I was trying to point out regarding the slow creep of that Communist agenda.

The shape isn't accidental. The official title is "crescent of embrace". The crescent is the symbol of Islam, and is on many state flags of Islamic countries.

I think the designers had the responsibility to anticipate at least some of the more obvious possible interpretations of their memorial, and the association between the Red Crescent and Islam is one of them. This is more than a few paranoid folks "misinterpretting" a design - the design itself echoes a well-known international symbol. The designers had a duty to avoid such an obviously embarassing and painful association, even if the association was unintentional. If they were design students, they would get a "D". Time to get back to the drawing board.

"When it comes to a memorial, all mankind sympathizes," he said." The idea of the Crescent of Embrace, Murdoch said, is to be a gesture of healing and bonding.'

Baloney!! If it's meant for "bonding and healing" where is the symbol of the Cross next to it?

Be sure to copy your faxes to local newspapers as well. They always seem to have enough time to write dopey articles protesting wind farms in Somerset County, which would help wean us from energy dependence on the the people who caused the Flight 93 hijacking:

The Johnstown Tribune Democrat

The Somerset Daily American

The following is more info. I found regarding the choice of the design and those involved....none of which will surprise those of us here at FR. But it is time to take the same action as Balding Eagle and get the word out about this dispicable hi-jacking of a national tragedy. Big kudos and thanks to the site I found on Google, named Sensible Mom.

From "Sensible Mom Web Site":

"On a whim I decided to google Milena Murdoch and Iraq War to see what would come up. The first hit was the magazine (update: actually it is an annual report) for the Heinz Endowment, Teresa Heinz's organization. From the magazine,"

"The Heinz endowment provided funding for a coordiator to be hired. We also contributed support for a design competition, which helped gather ideas from across the nation and produced the finanlists' concepts showcased here."

"Now it may be that the Heinz Endowment with its founder being from Pennsylvania was approached for funding and there's nothing more to it. However, the revelations during the election that the Heinz Foundation funded far left activitsts, like the Tides Foundation, makes me skeptical of any philanthropy from her organization."

"Update: Read the article in the Heinz Endowment magazine which begins on page 22 of the PDF file linked above. It outlines the process and the players and how they whittled down the competition from a couple hundred entrants to the five finalists. This article appears to have been written before the Murdoch's won the competition...."

Whatever the intent of the designers was, I find the memorial to be ugly.

This branding of American soil is nothing more than another attempt at appeasement.

I wonder when Kerry will make Terresa put her Burka on? Maybe all this "bonding" with Islamofascists is because Kerry likes the idea of 72 virgins after marrying her.

How can people who clam to be so intelligent be so ignorant?

I'd say that explains a lot.

The passengers and crew of Flight 93 were heroes, not victims of some unfathomable tragedy. A proper memorial should celebrate their courage and patriotism. Without context, bonding and healing are just buzz words. Bond with whom? Heal on what basis? Surely, not by forgetting exactly what happened on 9/11!
Trouble is, it is hard to find architects and artists who even understand this, much can express it artistically. Murdoch is obviously clueless if he thinks that "all mankind sympathizes" with the dead of Flight 93. Alas, it isn't so.

I agree.
As a professional designer I have to always be on the lookout for unintentional design results.
Even shapes that are not immediately recognizable suggest emotions and associations. Every designer and architect worth their salt knows at least a little bit about the psychology of advertising and design, and the impact their use of colors and shapes will have.

A previous post on this subject noted that the crescent points accurately to Mecca.

Call it what it is, Flight 93 Islamic Victory Memorial.

Whatever the intent of the designers was, I find the memorial to be ugly.

I would prefer a wind farm with American flags flying all around, and a big statue of a hand with it's middle finger raised to the East saying, "Take your Arab oil and shove it!"
