The Dem playbook

The Hill newspaper gives us a peek at the Democratic playbook for the Roberts hearings. Below are the attack assignments for the Democratic members of the Committee:

Kennedy -- civil rights

Leahy -- Bybee torture memo

Biden -- privacy, personal autonomyand the 9th Amendment

Kohl -- Property rights and civil liberties

Feinstein -- "judicial activism" and Roe vs. Wade

Feingold -- limits of executive powers

Schumer and Durbin have wisely refused to show their hand.

There have been four failures of this administration: Sept. 11, Afghanistan, Iraq and now Hurricane Katrina

Sheehan is getting her talking points from the O'Reilly Factor. Except she replaced gas prices with Afghanistan.

Right? Mandatory evacuation and she's headed there? Why? Is President Bush going to spend September there or something? (/sarc).

Fine, let her. The more Americans see her on TV blaming the President for the loss of her one son (who volunteered and who another woman raised) in a city where hundreds of sons and daughters and mothers and fathers were lost... they're going to see exactly what she stands for: nothing.

So you believe having great knowledge and total recall makes for a good USSC nominee. I disagree. Of course, its critical that a nominee to the SC know about US law and having total recall shows he is mentallly sharp. However. IMHO, that is not the standard for a good nominee to the USSC. Calling yourself a "modest" as Roberts did and brushing off words like "originalist" and "constitutionalist" is very distrubing to this conservative.

Specter is a shameless liar.

And a sorry excuse for a Republican and Committee Chairman.

This could be a canned answer to disallow the dems any more ammo during the hearings. I think if Roberts had "announced" his thinking was just like Scalia and Thomas, getting confirmed would have been a bit harder.

Just MHO

That was to throw off the Democrats I believe, he is good, and he is trying to avoid the fate of Estrada, Bork and Thomas. Reserve judgement.

Haven't had a chance to watch the hearings this morning, just caught the tail-end of Kennedy's questionning and Judge Roberts' reply before the break.

Brit Hume came on to say that the Chairman had to reprimand Kennedy several times for his rambling questions, that he kept interrupting Judge Roberts as he tried to respond to them. I'm going to watch that replay on C-Span tonight!

"W" chose one cool cat; he is positively brilliant and never at a loss for a reply--and without notes. Unlike those lightweights who are trying to trip him up. We all know this is all about getting their mugs on camera--and showing us how shallow they really are!

I was commenting on his demeanor here, and I gather from his answers that he would use the Constitution as his guide. I respect his annoyance w/labels. Did you have someone else in mind that is more conservative?

I wish we had that problem in NY. What we did early last year (even though presidential mostly), was stump in PA every weekend (imagine how I felt about Santorum and the Specter debacle), NJ, NY and other states (even during the RNC we had over 50 counterprotests). In all campaigns you have to start early, do door to door, have functions (nothing big) for a span. The dems come out at the last minute and lie then they drink the kool-aid. They depend on camera time... not hands on. They pull out the same lies every time and with no ideas. We go to the people and are there all the time.
