Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005 10:27 p.m. EDT Mary Landrieu: School Bus Failure Bush's Fault
It was the Bush administration's fault that hundreds of city school buses weren't dispatched to evacuate the hurricane-battered residents of New Orleans two weeks ago before floods swamped the city, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu said Sunday.
Asked on "Fox News Sunday" why New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin failed to follow the city's evacuation plan and press the buses into service, Landrieu blamed Bush administration cuts in mass transit funding.
"Mayor Nagin and most mayors in this country have a hard time getting their people to work on a sunny day, let alone getting them out of the city in front of a hurricane," she said. "And it's because this administration and administrations before them do not understand the difficulties that mayors . . . face." Landrieu then added: "In other words, this administration did not believe in mass transit. They won't even get people to work on a sunny day, let alone getting them out."
Saying she was unwilling to criticize Louisiana officials, the Louisiana Democrat insisted that Mayor Nagin's evacuation efforts had been a smashing success.
"Because the mayor evacuated the city, we had the best evacuation . . . of any evacuation I've seen. I'm 50 years old; I've never seen one any better," Landrieu told FNS.
That prompted FNS host Chris Wallace to remind: "But there were a hundred thousand people left in the city."
Landrieu once again blamed the White House, saying:
"They did [have] a hundred thousand people left in the city because this federal government won't support cities to evacuate people, whether it's from earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes. And that's the truth."
You don't have to bus most people, just those who don't have cars.
You need to do mass mailings to collect information about people who would need transportation. Cross-reference with tax records and other information, and presume you have to bus everybody in areas where more than 5% of the respondents request assistance.
Then also publish numbers to be called, and post bus emergency evacuation collection points throughout the city for people who might not otherwise be able to respond.
Not something I would spend a lot of money on in our county, but I would make it mandatory for a city under sea level which counts on power to keep from flooding even in NORMAL circumstances.
Off-topic sad observation: I'm hoping we get hit by the remnants of Ophelia, because we haven't had any rain since before Katrina, and I'm tired of watering the grass.
Deplorable, yes.
Right now Google will let you superimpose the trip directions over the post-Katrina sat-photos. It's just appalling to see.
I wish I could post the image, but it's tiled. And I don't know how to get Google to give me a link to the coordinates. People will have to go to maps.google.com and plug in the addresses themselves.

Here it is. He doesn't want it hotlinked but it works if you click off of his page (which actually uses more bandwidth as you have to load all the other things on his page too in addition to just the video, go figure).
On the top right there's a link that says "link to this page."
"Mayor Nagin and most mayors in this country have a hard time getting their people to work on a sunny day"

What's wrong with you all. Those buses are for VOTING only - sunny or not, rain or shine.
It is really very simple - DemocRats are communists

"Liberalism is a mental disorder." Best comment I've ever heard from the weirdo Savage.
Yes the evil Karl Rove is hiding the bodies, and in fact is re-animating them as Republican Zombies for Bush (RZ4B).
And cities are where the vast majority of Democratic votes come from in national elections. Yet the utter failure of these Democratic local governments, defensive of their autonomy, is STILL the White House's fault.
At least she's true to her family tradition as crooked, stupid Democrats.
At least these two incompetent fools are proving that stupidity and corruption is not a gender thing in Louisiana.
"and that's the truth."

good pickup. Agree
And I don't know how to get Google to give me a link to the coordinates.

So there is! Thank you.
O.K., Now not only does she sound incredibly stupid, she seems proud of it!
Mary quite contrary has a nice "angelic smile" methinks is a good fake out. She was scowling at the end of the interview on Fox.....Chris Wallace did a nice job hammering her with the facts and she lost it at the end of the question of where past federal funds designated for levee projects went unaccounted for? She kept blaming the Feds...
Mary Landscrew is my name for her.
Bump!
I AGREE!
I've rolled many ideas like this around!!!
You see it was all a bad mistake...the local TV stations played an old Jesse Jackson sound bite that said "Stay out of the Bushes!"
However due to the atmospheric distortion and and echo effect it sounded like "STAY OUTTA DA BUSES! STAY OUTTA DA BUSES!!!"
I do imagine people like her to be arrested and tried in public. Her little brother is going to as radioactive as Blanc-hole and that lyin' mayor hidin' out in Dallas with his family. The long and deep corruptions of LA's cash 'n' carry politics shall be dragged before the nation's public.
So Sen. Mary Landrieu (Dimwit Louisiana), the President of the United States is responsible for ensuring that city, county, state and federal employess show up for work?? Maybe he should interview them and write thier annual evaluation reports as well - not to mention handling the requests for vacations, sick leave etc... I mean, seriously, the President surely has enough time to handle these matters. The taxpayers could even save a lot of money in the process!! Positions such as Mayor or Govenor are really quite antiquated and should be eliminated (with due compensation of course!).
I'm all for your proposal! Concentration of all power at the federal level and the elimination of state and local governments!! Wow, maybe we should let the President handle ALL government matters. Imagine the efficiency of a single man/women system! No long politcal nonsense in a parlamentary body - just good sound executive decisions.
Of course, we wouldn't want just anybody in that position. He/She must have nuance and global vision. He/She should love children, animals and the environment and, if at all possible, be a vegetarian as well.
Heh, should have got Teddy to drive, he knows how to drive in water...
