Mary, Mary, Quite (To The) Contrary

Politics: Louisiana's senior senator, whose brother is lieutenant governor and whose father was New Orleans' mayor, is blaming President Bush for "the staggering incompetence of the federal government." Come again?

It's understandable that on the Sept. 4 edition of ABC's "This Week," Mary Landrieu said of President Bush, "I might likely have to punch him — literally" if he or members of his administration made any more disparaging remarks about local authorities and their pre- and post-Katrina efforts. Some are and were family.

Brother Mitch Landrieu is lieutenant governor of Louisiana. Father "Moon" Landrieu was not only mayor of New Orleans, but also later became secretary of housing and urban development under President Carter.

(snip)

Despite Landrieu's complaints of budget cuts and paltry funding, the fact is that over the five years of the Bush administration, Louisiana has received more money — $1.9 billion — for Army Corps of Engineers civil works projects than any other state, and more than under any other administration over a similar period. California is a distant second with less than $1.4 billion despite a population more than seven times as large.

(snip)

The problem was at the local level. The ambitious plan fell apart when the state suspended the Levee Board's ability to refinance old bonds and issue new ones. As the Times-Picayune reported, Legislative Auditor Dan Kyle "repeatedly faulted the Levee Board for the way it awards contracts, spends money and ignores no-bid contract laws." Blocked by the state from raising local money, the federal matching funds went unspent. By 1998, Louisiana's state government had a $2 billion construction budget, but less than one-tenth of one percent, or $1.98 million, was dedicated to New Orleans levee improvements. By contrast, $22 million was spent that year to renovate a home for the Louisiana Supreme Court.

This disaster saved their bacon, just in the nick of time, didn't it?

Certainly appears that way. Bet there will be lots of paperwork that was "lost" due to flooding, thus making a complete audit impossible.

Headline:
Bush - FEMA Midgets Responsible for Slow Response

Dateline Washington Sept. 10, 2005

President Bush said today through a spokesdwarf that a gang of midgets led by Sec. Brown (in a clever disguise -stilts!) actually led to the slow relief respose time. "Midgets have short arms and legs and cannot lift heavy packages like we stout dwarfs can!" said the spokesdwarf.

LOL!
Last night's "hurricane telethon" had Chris Rock spoofing the Kanye West comments, by saying, "George Bush hates midgets!" Co-inky-dink? I think NOT!

The ways in which LA mis-spent money instead of strengthening those levees is criminal.

But they are getting to blame the feds and come out looking like heroes. So far, it's working out real well for them. And until the MSM does some actual research into this story, it will continue working and LA will remain as corrupt as it's been all of my lifetime.

It's more like Jeb Bush is a governor who knows how to handle hurricane emergencies, regardless of who the president is.

True. And the President didn't go down there until it was safe and his entourage wouldn't get in the way of rescue efforts. He'd have gone to NO if those conditions had been met.

And let's not forget Haley Barbour in MS. His state was hit much harder than LA, and he's had no trouble getting the help he needs from the Feds. He's actually praised them.

Mary is scared spitless because she's just seen her electoral base spread out over several states, with many saying that they have no intention of returning to LA.

Why weren't the levees fixed during the Clinton years? I thought he "loved black people".

What a mess!

Orleans schools millions in the hole
Audit shows system overspending budget
Thursday, May 12, 2005

... For the second year in a row, the audit carries a disclaimer because auditors could not certify its figures in light of the shabby condition of system records. Adjustments will need to be made later, auditor Mike Schexnayder said, and they won't bring good news.

(snip)

The audit also includes a litany of findings detailing the board's fiscal incompetence, many that have appeared in previous years' audits and remain uncorrected. They detail continuing screw-ups in payroll, human resources, information technology, accounting and grant reimbursements.

Minutes From June 5 Meeting Of Orleans Parish School Board: Using School Buses In Evacs
Orleans Parish Shool Board ^ | June 5 2005 | None

Posted on 09/06/2005 8:19:29 PM CDT by angkor

Found this in the Google cache, the minutes from a June 5 meeting of the Orleans Parish School Board.

The Board members had a very specific discussion about releasing school buses to the City Of New Orleans for hurricane evacuations.

Sorry for the length, but it does provide some valuable insights, e.g., what took the City so long to conclude this deal? They'd been talking with the School Board for at least a year.

I've thought about that.....

I heard today too that a number of Mary's constituents are considering staying in Texas rather than going back to the Dem-caused slums that they were forced to leave.

The base is going to be gone, and when the facts are truly revealed as to who was negligent (the Governor and Mayor), and who was NOT (the President), there's going to be some serious splintering of support of the people that the Dems have taken advantage of and abused for 60 years in LA.

They want to howl about Halliburton/KBR?? Three companies — the Shaw Group, KBR and Boh Brothers Construction of New Orleans — have been awarded no-bid contracts by the Army Corps of Engineers to perform levee repair work.

The head exec of Shaw Group is Jim Berhard who managed Blanko's transition team when she was elected governor. Boh Brothers is an old New Orleans company who is most likely well versed in grafts. Matter of fact, the 14 contractors who were shot at on the bridge were Boh Bros employees who are contracted to the Army Corps of Engineers for levee work.

"....becoming a better city under Mayor Nagin's leadership. . ..... least corrupt mayor in a long long time

Your contention borne out by two refugees now residing with us ... and they are Republicans. However, Ray Nagin is reportedly not really bright in that he has absolutely no head for organization and administration, and has been fighting a losing battle with substance abuse. He has also, although he may well be less corrupt than his predecessors, surrounded himself with a cast of Amos'n'Andy type characters who would steal the pennies off a dead man's eyes.

Doggone it, let's be charitable. Maybe they're "Porgy and Bess" characters.

In perspective he is the least corrupt mayor in a long long time...

I believe you are correct, and that is why of all the Dems involved in this, he's the one considered most "expendable" by the DNC, and the other Dem movers and shakers. The fact that he endorsed both Jindal for governor, and Bush for President only add more fuel to the effort...
