We Shut Down the Bridge
Washington Times & UPI via NRO ^ | Sep. 9, 2005 | Shaun Waterman

Posted on 09/09/2005 11:06:37 AM PDT by hipaatwo

Think local officials are less to blame for deaths in New Orleans than federal officials? In the most jaw-dropping story of the week, UPI has the police chief of Gretna, Louisiana, admitting that he closed off one of the major arteries out of New Orleans on Monday, before the storm hit:

"We shut down the bridge," Arthur Lawson, chief of the City of Gretna Police Department, confirmed to United Press International, adding that his jurisdiction had been "a closed and secure location" since before the storm hit.

"All our people had evacuated and we locked the city down," he said. The bridge in question -- the Crescent City Connection -- is the major artery heading west out of New Orleans across the Mississippi River.

He added that the small town, which he called "a bedroom community" for the city of New Orleans, would have been overwhelmed by the influx. "There was no food, water or shelter" in Gretna City, Lawson said. "We did not have the wherewithal to deal with these people. If we had opened the bridge, our city would have looked like New Orleans does now: looted, burned and pillaged."

But doesn't that prove that it wasn't an action based upon race? (Yes- wrong to turn people away if you have resources to help them) but not racist. How do you see it?

I actually volunteer to host two families- oh, btw- I don't know what color their skin is- I never asked. I am making shoe box treasure boxes for the kids in my area at our local Katrina shelter. Hmm- I never asked what color skin those kids have....(they should screen out a bigot like me tho- don't you think?)

Do you think means of evacuation should be shut down before a storm?

Then why are you defending the closing of the bridge before the storm?

That bridge is part of US Highway 90, and one of the main exits to the west from New Orleans.

My only point is that I understand how people in that neighborhood felt about protecting their lives, homes, property, etc.....I think they should have found another way to get them somewhere else.

But ya know what, I don't think it is my fault that many, many people were scared of some of the people in New Orleans. It is not my fault that that place has such a bad reputation and people were frightened about letting others into their neighborhoods.

Protect their homes from old people with wheelchairs, stranded tourists, and women holding babies - people who wanted to evacuate the area.

There is an interesting story in the Fort Worth Star Telegram. A 14 year old girl was walking home from school and a man tried to abduct her but she got away and called 911 from her cell phone. The cops got there and found the guy, who was walking around looking for the girl, and he was carrying a big stick. He was a refugee from NO and a registered sex offender.

NOPE. protecting their families/homes/etc from ARMED THUGS.

as i said, even the mainSLIME, LEFTIST,W-hating, TV media types admitted that MANY of the people at the bridge incident were ARMED with guns, knives, clubs, etc.

do you think the armed ones were interested in evacuation OR could it be that they were looking for "targets of opportunity"????

inquiring minds want to know.

I will admit that some of the innocent people involved got punished right along with those who are not so innocent.

I have said very little about this whole fiasco, but the way the people of NO behaved has put a stain on this nation that will take a while to wash off. And I put most of the blame on people who are unable to take care of themselves for 1 week, just one week, or even just a few days! (I do not include those that are elderly, infirm, etc....of course we as a society should take care of those who can not take care of themselves). But, I seen way too many able-bodied young men doing absolutely nothing.....like I said it was a disgrace to this country.

That story does not justify blocking evacuees from leaving an uninhabitable city.

Ya, I see the story......

I also seen a story on the news with a police officer who sent his family to Baton Rouge to be safe and stayed behind to help those in need. He didn't talk to his family for days and when he finally got a break he wanted to go check on his house before he headed to Baton Rouge. His house survived the storm quite well but had been looted. You should have seen the pictures, whole house looked ransacked, wife's jewelry gone, etc.....he cried, saying how could the people he stayed behind to help do this to him? It was disgusting. And what little sympathy I had left for most of the people in NO went right out the window.
