Think local officials are less to blame for deaths in New Orleans than federal officials? In the most jaw-dropping story of the week, UPI has the police chief of Gretna, Louisiana, admitting that he closed off one of the major arteries out of New Orleans on Monday, before the storm hit:
"We shut down the bridge," Arthur Lawson, chief of the City of Gretna Police Department, confirmed to United Press International, adding that his jurisdiction had been "a closed and secure location" since before the storm hit.
"All our people had evacuated and we locked the city down," he said. The bridge in question -- the Crescent City Connection -- is the major artery heading west out of New Orleans across the Mississippi River.
He added that the small town, which he called "a bedroom community" for the city of New Orleans, would have been overwhelmed by the influx. "There was no food, water or shelter" in Gretna City, Lawson said. "We did not have the wherewithal to deal with these people. If we had opened the bridge, our city would have looked like New Orleans does now: looted, burned and pillaged."

After seeing the other forum last night, I really don't care what you think, as you won't care about my thoughts. I will just have my own satisfaction of expressing my thoughts, after reading some garbage comments there last night about FR and Freepers. Hypocrites. :)
I did see, there are some good Freepers on that forum. I don't mean to insult them. This is directed to those who find it necessary to trash this forum and the people on it. They are even posters, here regularly. To cut and paste is so juvenile. Run from one forum to the other. How old are some of you over there?? Grow up.
A few of you need a break and should spend more time with family or do something positive and constructive.
How truly ridiculous it is, that some take the time to insult FR and slander JimRob. Go out of their way to cut and paste threads. What really is the point? How silly. How does going onto another forum and attacking this one have any positive outcome? It doesn't. It's done for one's own entertainment value. Talk about and insulting people on this forum. Hypocrites. I imagine many of the people who blast this site, still come here for their news too.
I do not know why some expect FR is to be their own place and all things to all people. We are JimRob’s guests on HIS forum. If I didn’t like how he ran his forum, I would have left, without ranting and slandering him and FR for months and years on another forum. It's like a strange sort of mission to some over there. What a waste of energy. They cannot go through every single comment and make a judgment. That’s why there is an abuse button.
Jim Rob and the Moderators have such a huge task, with thousands of people opening their mouths, voicing opinions on some of the most controversial subjects, some opinions very good, some opinions really bad. Jim Rob and the moderators do an incredible job. Nothing is going to be absolutely perfect. However, the good extremely far outweighs the bad here. If you hit abuse, the Moderator is there, very quickly to take care of the situation.
The cut and pastes over there. Reminds me of what the MSM does when President Bush has an excellent speech and we only see that one vague clip that the MSM picks to play over and over again, that changes the context of what he actually said. Like some of you did, to some of the posters here. A few took what Diva Betsy Ross was saying, totally out of context.
Those who went out of their way to cut and paste what DBR said to the CP forum, took her comments out of context to fit their rant. DBR is not a bigot. I wish people would have stopped taking their frustrations out on her and did something positive. The few were just nit picking her every word. Someone made a negative comment about her home schooling attitude. Like she judges others. I send my kids to public schools and have had some excellent exchanges with DBR. Never in any of them, did she condemn me for not home schooling. I've never seen her do that on other threads. Actually, she is very supportive. You are all going off half cocked attacking her for what? Your own jollies? How sad.
Here's an example of your cuts and pastes. Someone cuts and pastes a paragraph from a Freeper:

Just trying to stir up that pot. Alluding that poster is stating this about MHKing/RB3. That person was so quick to criticize, he/she didn’t even bother to read the post and who it was about it. The Freeper was commenting on the politicians in the article. Not anyone on FR. Perfect example of what is going on over there with a few of you.
Too bad some do not take some time and actually read the entire context of post. Especially when condemnation follows. At least one person pointed it out there. Carry on. Don't let the door. Well you know. :)
the source for what i said was a videotape shown on MSNBC & several clips from the other TV networks.
all i can tell you is to go look at their archives.

----how easy it was for ordinary people to get guns, which they then use against the out-gunned police at places like Gretna. (NO quotation marks, but that is very close to what the talking-head said. the LEFTIST, FREEDOM-HATING media NEVER misses a chance to BASH/ridicule the NATURAL RIGHT of the common person to protect his/her life/family/property!).

I did that after the Shiavo threads got hijacked and nasty and it did wonders to me.
Every now and then I take a day or two off from FR especially when the topics are to intense and start getting nasty posts that attack FReepers personally.
I haven't visited this thread for a day or two,because some of the things that were said here and it made me upset.
Cyborg ,I followed your advice until today.I saw GBUSA's post and felt obligated to respond.
This will probably be my last post on this thread,because it isn't worth my time to sit here and squabble with FReepers that think it is all race related,which is total nonsense, it was the failure of the first responders i.e. local Police,local Government and the Governor,that brought on the suffering of the people down there.
Some here fell into the race baiting trap by Jesse Jacka$$ and Al Sharpton.It takes time to organize a relief effort and to ship relief supplies into an area like this and it doesn't help if the Governor blocks those efforts with every step of the way.
My two cents.

I never fathomed that I would get under so many people's skin with my posts that they would actually take time out of their busy day (oops....I guess not too busy) to talk about me on another message board. Someone they do not know. I find it weird. Anyway, people need to take some things with a grain of salt and move on.....most Freepers are great people! FR is still the best place on the net!
what the "press" has presented is a "carefully woven fabric of LIES, 1/2-truths, propaganda, DIMocRAT talking points & SPIN", INTENTIONALLY designed to damage the POTUS & every conservative in the nation. nothing more or less than that.

Yes, Mrs. N, It sure was. What's horrible is that is being distorted, from untruths being told. I pray the future holds some accountability for those officials, who did nothing to protect the people down there.
IF you were reliably told that "on the other side of the bridge" AND "out of your jurisdiction" (where you have NO AUTHORITY, whatever!), that a MOB of armed criminals and PERHAPS "some innocent persons" was trying to enter YOUR TOWN, what would YOU do????
open the "floodgates" & let them in to possibly LOOT,MURDER,RAPE,ROB,etc. OR would you protect your town/citizens????
tell us "Chief", what would you do???
fwiw, IF i was the chief of police (i was once a City Marshal of a small town in TX, so i know a LITTLE about the choices you sometimes HAVE to make, absent GOOD/complete information.), "my image" would be the last thing on "my list of necessary things".
