New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes
The New York Times ^ | Sept 8, 2005 | ALEX BERENSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

Posted on 09/09/2005 10:47:37 AM PDT by Jack Black

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 8 - Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to hundreds of security guards hired by businesses and some wealthy individuals to protect property. The guards, employees of private security companies like Blackwater, openly carry M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said that he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.

Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and the police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.

MY "two" sources on the ground I just contacted by sat cellular (not working real good BTW) and a e-mail say they are taking the firearms from those walking the streets "brandishing" them and from homes that are already evacuated where the weapons are clearly visable in the corner or on a table, a old style glass gun cabinet etc ....searching only people sized spaces for dead or injured or scared adult or child. They see a firearm they remove it from the home. No reciept left....

Homeowners are allowed to keep their own firearms according to a contracted house sitter and a friend at the Joint Task Force DOD Control Center down there....

If they are walking the streets with a weapon visable it's taken from them....period.

Don't like that either.... but hey insanity is set on high there for a while. Wait for the BS laws to take effect in the next few months in all big cities based on what "could" happen to close any loop holes that NOLA socialists have tripped over......

Purchase all to-be-cached weapons and ammunition with cash and make sure your name is in no way associated with the firearms.

The city's Police Department and federal law enforcement officers from agencies like the United States Marshals Service will lead the evacuation, Mr. Compass said. Officers will search houses in both dry and flooded neighborhoods, and no one will be allowed to stay, he said.

Many of the residents still in the city said they did not understand why the city remained intent on forcing them out.

"I know the risks," said Renee de Pontchieux, as she sat on a stool outside Kajun's Pub in the working-class Bywater neighborhood east of downtown. "We used to think we lived in America - now we're not so sure. Why should we allow this government to chase us out and allow people from outside to rebuild our homes? We want to rebuild our homes."

After homeowners in the dry areas are disarmed and forced from their houses, they, who have already lost a lot, may lose everything as looters, and vandals, both unofficial and official, complete the job Hurricane Katrina started.

It sounds like they are looking at the registrations and making sure they get those guns. If you resist, you will be arrested or shot. Doesn't sound like anyone is resisting.

AFAIK there is no gun registration law in LA or NO.

LA in general has been pretty good on the gun issue up until now, but of course with a leftist Democratic administration at both the local and state levels you can't count on any Constitutional right being safe.

I hope that any NO citizen who is harmed or loses significant property because he or she was deprived of their legally owned firearm will sue the city and state, and the mayor and governor personally. I don't know if that's legally possible, but if it isn't it should be. Confiscating a person's gun in that chaotic situation is equivalent to imposing a death sentence on him or her.

The law suits need to start. Criminal investigations should also be pushed. Unfortunately, it will take mob action to scare the establishment to the correct action, i.e. as does the race baiters and hate crime mongers do to get their way.

Since this is the lying and spinning NY Slimes, we might want to keep our powder dry until this is confirmed and not by AP, Rooters or ABCNNBCBS.

Larry Pratt is doing a radio interview right now with Alex Jones.

One of the thoughts he has conveyed is that a single individual can't resist this.

He is stressing organization.

I hear you loud and clear.

Has the governor replaced Nagin the Noggin with one of her stooges? Just how does Blank-0-Blanco take over New Orleans?

Inquiring minds kind of thing. ;)

"I was thinking along a similar line that in this case having simply stored them in a weighted waterproof case (like a Pelican) would put it under the dark water and out of reach of the gun grabbing LEOs."

What is the purpose of having weapons if you are just going to bury them in the face of tyranny?

1 .357
1 .45
and many rounds of ammo in my cache.

Bu, but, registration would never lead to confiscation!
