I have a Question... Isn't the water exteremely toxic?
My Keyboard ^ | 9/8/2005 | Robert Eimiller

Why are they pumping all that extremely toxic contaminated water into Lake Pontchetrain(sp)? The toxic contaminates are contained behind the levies... pre-treat it there before pumping it out into the uncontaminated environment...

What is their damned hurry??

New Orleans has been evacuated and for all intents and purposes destroyed; it will be years before it "MIGHT" be rebuilt.

I live in Buffalo NY about 20 miles from Love Canal, New Orleans has become a huge Love Canal and now they're blindly pumping toxins into the rest of the Mississippi Delta and eventually the Delta ground water.

What a pathetic knee-jerk decision.

The lake and the ocean will dilute and correct the toxins over time. Leaving them in the city will kill people, so it is a choice.

New Orleans has been determined to be a higher priority than the lake and its lifeforms.

Love canal was never what they made it to be and this is poetic justice for the enviornmentalists who were part of the problem.

It is something like 45,000 times more toxic than normal.

Environmentalists fear pumping the water out of the city (back in Lake P) could cause area contamination for years. But they have little choice. They have to do something with the water, and they certainly can't haul it to the moon.

It's a matter of concentration that results in toxicity. In a vast amount of water like Ponchatrain, it will be diluted to below toxic levels. As it drains into the Gulf, it will become absolutely insignificant.

I thought about that too but think it would be impractical to cleanse the water first before pumping it back into the lake.

Also it is a very big salt water lake and the ocean it is connected to will help clean it.

Think very large settling pond. Tour a treatment plant, it's what they use.
