The new buzzwords in Washington are "Katrina investigation."
What the would-be Katrina-gaters want to do is this: Set up an official-looking process that will enable them to dig up dirt on their enemies and rivals.
Sounds like a great idea, because there's plenty of legitimate mud to be slung. But let's make sure it's equal-opportunity. Let's make sure everyone, absolutely everyone, who deserves a good tarring gets one - and maybe some feathers, too.
First, let's start with the federal government. President George W. Bush should remember Harry Truman's motto, "The buck stops here," as he evaluates the performance of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and his underling, Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown. Before taking their current posts, Chertoff was a judge, and Brown ran horse shows - a job from which he was fired. Does Bush really want to tell us these are the best people we have for disaster prevention and relief?

Yawn, another New York elite writing for other New York elites in the media.
LOL, hysterical and predictable.
Jim Pinkerton is such a limp-wristed dork. Hey Jim, grab a shovel and get down to New Orleans.
Not as bad as most and does highlight hiz honor Nagin.
Has he even bothered to investigate any of this? Shoot, a bunch of freepers have done that, and shown exactly who is to blame. I realize, not much if any of the blame falls on the President--so that won't interest a lot of these hacks.
You didn't read the whole article, did you? He slams the locals pretty bad.
Yes, lets convene another 9/11 type commission, i.e. a commission to blame everything and anything on Bush. We can find ourselves some new Jersey Girls, except now we can call them the Lousiana Ladies or some such thing. Gee, I wonder what democrat would be on such a committee. . .one Richard Ben-Viniste? Of course. Yes, lets investigate.
Meanwhile, Able Danger looms. Meanwhile, the light is going to be shined brightly on the original commission to blame Bush for everything. Why oh why does Nancy Pelosi and the crew want another 9/11 type commission?
But what will you do, Butterly, if Pinkerton doesn't return?
I read it, therefore the yawn.
Now that they've had their week of Bush-bashing 24/7, now they say "let's not point fingers" and "there is plenty of blame to go around." Typical.
Uh, Pinkerton is a Republican/Libertarian. He worked for Bush 41, as well.
What, Pinkerton can't even mention the "heroic" efforts of Governor Blanco's staff to keep the Red Cross water away from the people packed along I-10?
Come on Jim, you were on a roll, what happened? The column got too long?
He conveniently omits the one person most responsible for this turning into the catastrophe it did - and who continues to impede relief efforts - Governor Blanco. In fact, I'd say that this article is proof that the memo has gone out to the MSM: cover up for Blanco's gross failures at any cost.
Exactly, his time is up, he is compromised, he writes for his peers, not for Americans any more.
As does most of the conservative/Republican press.
Plenty of hurricane blame to go around = Democrats are solely responsible
I didn't think it was predictable. There is almost no mass media pointing fingers at Nagin. To see it was refreshing.
Yep, Blanco is the great big elephant standing in the middle of the room that everyone seems to be studiously avoiding tarnishing with the blame game. Amazing.
From http://www.fema.gov/about/bios/brown.shtm Re Brown's background. (the article said his previous job was running horse shows and he got fired??)
Prior to joining FEMA, Mr. Brown practiced law in Colorado and Oklahoma, where he served as a bar examiner on ethics and professional responsibility for the Oklahoma Supreme Court and as a hearing examiner for the Colorado Supreme Court. He had been appointed as a special prosecutor in police disciplinary matters. While attending law school he was appointed by the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee of the Oklahoma Legislature as the Finance Committee Staff Director, where he oversaw state fiscal issues. His background in state and local government also includes serving as an assistant city manager with emergency services oversight and as a city councilman.
Mr. Brown was also an adjunct professor of law for the Oklahoma City University.
Pinkerton is still peddling the half-stories to try to diminish the authority of these figures.
