The Real Gold Star Mothers
8/26/05 | YumaGeorG

It was a unanimous decision. We finally decided to respond to the events that are taking place “down below”. We especially want to respond to that mother, Mrs. Sheehan, but our message is also meant for many more, the media, columnists like Cohen, Dowd, Krugman, and other left-wingers. Let me explain. Oh….before I do, I’m sorry, but you should know who “We” are. “We”, “Up Here”, are “Gold Star Mothers”. Tens and tens and tens of thousands, most of us, from the WW2 period and also from the Korean war , the Vietnam war and a few from the Desert Storm war. First of all we want to say to Mrs. Sheehan that we can certainly understand her grief in losing a son in Iraq. All of us “Up Here” grieved when our Blue Star (in the window) was changed to a Gold Star. I, for one, had 2 Gold Stars. I lost one son in Normandy, 4 days after D day, and the other, on Guadalcanal in the Pacific. I grieved, let me tell you, Mrs. Sheehan. There was one mother who lost 6, that is 6 sons, in WW2. But, there was something far different in our reaction to these tragedies, than what We see “down there” now. We did not start calling our president (Roosevelt) every kind of vile, vicious name, nor did we “protest” and write anti-War articles to the press. If I may, allow me to “teach” a little history here. From what “We’ve” observed, “Up Here”, a great number of the U.S. citizenry have forgotten or never learned their country’s history. In the 1940 and ‘41 years, there were a number of us who were protesting against the president because we did not want him to get us involved in “that European war”. It was “their” war and we did not want to see WW1 all over again. We were called “isolationists”. But then came Dec. 7 (8), Pearl Harbor. I believe, if you try, Mrs. Sheehan, you can easily equate this event with the attack by terrorists on Sept. 11th. We feel, Up Here”, that you, Mrs. Sheehan and those who share your views are forgetting that tragic day. You are also forgetting that this is a war against terrorists, everywhere and not only in Iraq. Anyway, back to history. Those of us who were isolationists were transformed, together with every American, into full-blown patriots. Yes, we grieved, as the war progressed and sons were killed, and not only mothers but fathers and grandparents and cousins and aunts and the whole nation grieved for every serviceman who lost his or her life. They were heroes and we, united as one, recognized that they had died to not only “save the world, but to keep America free from a ruthless dictator, Hitler, and also, from the dangerous ambitions of an Imperialist Japan. No one, regardless of the battle setbacks we experienced during the war, and there were quite a number of them,… no one even thought about writing vicious letters to the media or to the president, or starting protest marches and “vigils” (vigils, now that is a laugh). These would have been considered treasonous. I repeat, “Treasonous”, because they would have been considered, “giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Which is exactly what you, Mrs. Sheehan are doing. You, and the radical, left-wing members of the media, And, sorry to say, a number of members of the Democrat party, Senators and Congressmen. Can you even imagine that! A great number of us “Up Here” feel that there are “Benedict Arnolds” “down there”. They seem to be driven by “hate”,(Bush), or by some sort of ego-driven ambition for power (Democrats). And you, Mrs. Sheehan, have been a magnet for every left-wing activist in the U.S.. Michael Moore and Move On.org, comes readily to mind. There is something that saddens “us” even more. Your son, Casey. He has asked me to tell his mother that he tried to tell her that he felt it was his choice to serve his country at a time when it is being threatened by an enemy more ruthless than any that has threatened our country before. And, as we know, a threat to other countries, like Great Britain, Spain, the Philippines, etc. He was hoping that you might have a change of opinion, and recognize that your son really did die for a noble cause. From “Up Here”, of course we can see things clearly, but we also can see that it does not take a mental wizard to understand that what the president and our Allies are trying to do is right for the U.S. and for the rest of the free world. Terrorism is the enemy. Terrorists hate our country, they hate the freedom that you and others enjoy. And they don’t want to have Iraq, and Afghanistan to be free. If we, the United States and our allies leave Iraq, they, the terrorists will have a platform from which to launch further attacks on the U.S. and the other nations they despise. Do you, Mrs. Sheehan (and all the others I mentioned above) want to see your homeland become the terrorist’s battleground?? One more point… freedom of speech. What we hear is “you can’t keep us from exercising our “freedom of speech”.” Well, you don’t have to tell us about “freedom of speech”. We and those before us and after us, had sons and daughters who died to keep those freedoms alive in the U.S. But, the “free speech” we here from “down there” does nothing but embolden the enemy. They know that any action by them is exaggerated and placed on page 1. Then people like you start your pro-defeatist mantra and they feel they can win this war. Did I mention “aid and comfort to the enemy?!” It will take heroes like your son and the strong resolve of every citizen of the U.S. to defeat our enemy. Will you, Mrs. Sheehan (and those who share your agenda and views), be a “Benedict Arnold” and hinder our military and our government from making our citizens safe and free, by defeating the terrorists? For you and those who share your views, is that your agenda?? If it is, all of us “Gold Star Mothers “Up Here” cry “Shame” and “God help America”.

I don't see any reference to this article on the Gold Star Mothers' web page. Who wrote it?

Dear Gold Star Mothers:

WWII, Korea, and pre-Tet Vietnam were legitimate wars because they were started by Democrats. If you lost a son then, he is a hero.

You're not supposed to notice that Germany, Italy, Korea, and Vietnam did not bomb us.

These so-called wars in Iraq do not count. They were just trumped-up excuses by greedy Republican Presidents to seize their oil. If you lost a son or daughter then, he or she was a mercenary dupe who gave his life to enrich the Bush Criminal Enterprise. Protesting at his or her funeral, vandalizing your home the night of the funeral, are all legitimate responses.

The true heroes in these so-called wars are the ones who refused to fight.

Sincerely,

Dowd, Krugman, and the Rest of the Left

It appears this is either a vanity or something that is making the rounds on the Internet. The perspective of the voice in this article is of a Gold Star parent who has died and is speaking from Heaven.

I feel like an idiot to not have picked up on that. I kept trying to rationalize the "up here" and "down there" stuff with current reality, and I wasn't having much luck at it.

I just finished a 6 hour phone conversation with a client, with whom I've been connected via GoToMyPc all that time. That's my 'scuse! :)

I guess you did not "get" the gist of the Gold Star Mother's message. Once they found that the US had real enemies, they backed our going to war completely...100%. They did not attack the president with vicios attacks which would have been encouraging to Hitler and the Japanese. In other words.."giving aid and comfort to the e nemy". As Sheehan, and a whole group of brain-dead, hate filled non-patriots are doing. They use "freedom of speech" as an excuse for anti-American rhetoric.

No kidding.I guess you "got" it. Oh..and tens and tens of thousands of other Gold Star Mothers.
I guess they wanted the present generation to know what real patriotism is like, and how they fear for the future of this U.S.

Golly!! How did you know. Actually, between 90 and 130.
Yeah, and we worry about what's going on "down there". Are you on Sheehans left-wing tour?

If the above wasn't so stupid, it would be laughable. Maybe it's both.

I know all that. Why do you think I signed the letter "Dowd, Krugman and the Rest of the Left?" I am not any of them.

If what I wrote were my thoughts, I would have signed my own name. Duh!
