SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a bill that would have required candidates who sign a code of fair campaign practices to refrain from using negative references to a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.
Assemblyman Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, said his bill was needed to discourage political campaigns that create fear and intimidation and could lead to violence.
But Schwarzenegger said signing the campaign code is voluntary and there would be no way to enforce the bill except through the ballot box.
"I trust the people to be the best judge of conduct of a campaign when they exercise their franchise to vote," he said in a veto message. "I am confident that they will reject candidates that use appeals to negative prejudices against any group of people."

Sound and reasonable thoughts from the Govinator..
It's a good step. On the other hand, I would have liked the opportunity to fully support self-proclaimed raging heterosexual candidates.
Would it ban the canards racistsexisthomophobe, too?
Wow. My respect for Arnold has just gone way up. Let the people listen and decide for themselves. What a concept.
Governor vetoes anti-gay bashing measure aimed at normalizing sick and twisted sodomites in California culture.
What constitutes a "negative reference?" Could you say you opposed gay marriage? Would that be a negative reference?
Damn, no more references to "gay cheese eating surrender monkeys"

The a-holes in Kalifornia's government don't know, and are unwilling to solve the financial and social woes in their State, but are more than willing to push the gay agenda? These people should all be fired immediately. How pathetic!
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a referendum in California a few years ago that had a majority vote against gay marriage?
