John Edwards says the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina underscores the "two Americas" theme of his presidential campaign last year.
"We see the poor and working class of New Orleans who don't own a car and couldn't evacuate to hotels or families far from the target of Katrina," Edwards said in e-mail messages to supporters Friday "We see the suffering of families who lived from paycheck to paycheck and who followed the advice of officials and went to shelters at the Civic Center or the Superdome or stayed home to protect their possessions."
Edwards added, "We have been too slow to act in the face of the misery of our brothers and sisters. This is an ugly and horrifying wake-up call to America."
The subject of Katrina is likely to come up when Edwards today launches a lecture series at the UNC Law School's Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity.
Edwards is director of the center, and he recently named as deputy director Marion Crain, a law professor, and Laura Hogshead as assistant director.
The Democratic vice presidential nominee last year was in Chicago last week raising money for Democrats at the Knickerbocker Hotel, meeting with Englewood activists and U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush.
Edwards, who left office in January as North Carolina senator, will help Rep. Brad Miller raise money for his re-election kitty. Edwards, a former senator, is scheduled to appear at a Miller fund-raiser Oct. 10 at the home of Frank and Julia Daniels. Frank Daniels is the former publisher of The News & Observer. The cost of entry to the event ranges from $250 to $1,000.
Meanwhile, Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Edwards' former jogging buddy and closest friend in the Senate, has been wading into Edwards' political turf.
Bayh, who like Edwards is considering a presidential run, attended a South Carolina Democratic Party fund-raiser in Columbia last week. Edwards, a native of South Carolina, carried that state in the Democratic presidential primary last year.
"two Americas"
Those who will sue and those who can be sued.
He says he sees two Americas, but he only describes one.
LOL - Don't they all?
I see two Americas: the whining Democrats, and the grown-ups.
I see two "Edwards"; One's a ambulance-chasing whore, and the other a political charlatan.
I thought we voted to not care what he thinks?
... again.
Two Americas: The Looters and the Victims.
Who?
Two Americas:
The one that gets down to business and focuses on getting the job done.
The one whose rage, anger and misplaced resentment is so all consuming that all it can do is complains and fingerpoint without offering any productive solutions (or even words of inspiration).
I also see two Americas:
One, exemplified by conservative governorship as displayed in Texas and Mississippi that has clearly defined plans and the leadership to carry out those plans, with personal responsibility down to each citizen.
The other, as shown in the Liberal "leadership" in the Democratic party and at the State and Local level in Louisiana, is rife with corruption, abdicates personal responsibility, and has no leadership or organizational capability to carry out plans that have merely been put down on paper.
When does one stop being a member of the "working class" and turn into a person who is gainfully employed? The distinction eludes me.
Best--and most accurate--putdown of the campaign.
He apparently has two left eyes........
----
This observation is most appropriate...that idiot neck-cracking, ambulance-chasing fool is at it again. What is he doing? -- trying OUT-LIBERAL Hitlery???
There are two Americas, all right. One is made up of people who think somebody owes them a living and their enablers. The other is made up of people who unwillingly subsidize that fantasy.
Wrong answer. Repeating a losing campaign theme doesn't make it any better.
The breck girl has his head up a dark place and thus has a distorted view of the world.
LOL...me too. I was disappointed but not surprised to see it was a genuine article. How sad.
Almost as sad as the losers who continue to drive around with Kerry/Edwards bumperstickers on their cars...
