This is really out of hand, and UNCALLED FOR HERE ON FR!!!!!
95% of you have no idea what happens when you lose everything, EVERYTHING, and have to move on. I do. A 2002 house fire was my Katrina. The insurance company cut us a check for $2000 for immediate needs and it was gone in a week. It may sound like we were living like Donald Trump, but think about it a second:
3 modest sets of clothing for 4 people. (Think that's a lot? Go look in your closet!)
Groceries - and not just a normal restock the shelves groceries, but starting from scratch. Sugar, salt, a few other spices, canned goods, some meats, EVERYTHING.
Toiletries - remember, we weren't restocking, we were starting from scratch.
A coffee maker, some simple pots & pans. Some cheap flatware. Plates.
And there are so many other things people take for granted.
$2000 is a tiny amount to start your life over, especially when you have kids. It's a life raft.
So y'all go on ahead making jokes about malt liquor and nikes. There but for the grace of God.
Expect this cost to rise very quickly.
Didn't think about the precedent thing. Hey, can I claim hardship up here in NY cause of higher gas prices? I got affected.
That's usually how it works.
I should catch a flight out with a few grand in my pocket. I bet I could buy these cards for a quarter on the dollar in the next day or two on the street.

Maybe it's a good thing I gave before Congress started talking $. Especially now, I can imagine some people would be thinking, "I gave at the office," and I can't say as I'd blame them. Congress is certainly trying to be the nation's charity. FEMA might as well be trying to put the private charities out of business.
Oh stuff it. What is uncalled for is people who believe their personal problems should be paid for by everyone else. I'm really sorry you lost everything (except the most important things in your life) and I'm even more sorry YOU weren't responsible enough to have enough savings put aside to take care of the family you voluntarily created in an emergency.
Don't cry to me.
These people have been living off freebies their ENTIRE LIFE, and they are living off FREEBIES NOW; they will be living off FREEBIES the REST OF THEIR LIVES, and that includes right now.
So why do they need $2000 now?
I don't want crocodile tears from Oprah, I don't want emotional tears from you. If anything, the people of New Orleans should be weeping honest tears for me and every other taxpayer as WEARE THE ONES GETTING SCREWED! We are slaves! We slave to pay their freebies. They are the masters.
having a choice about how to use money/aid/progrmas from the gov happens all the time.
people need diff things so it would make sense to me to allow people to take charge of their needs instead of a cookie cutter, one size fits all approach.
I don't think for a minute that everyone has people like you in mind. We all know that there is genuine need out there. It's just that people are so sick of the welfare cheaters and how they abuse the system that it tends to make one cynical. I've seen enough of it where we used to live and have just about no use for welfare. I can hardly count on one hand the number of people who really needed it.
Yeah, my first thought and a home theater system.

Insurance company = private enterprise.
Red Cross = private enterprise.
Salvation Army = private enterprise.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Floridians who suffered damages from Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, have been approved for $3,169,950,000 thus far in federal and state disaster assistance, according to Florida’s State Emergency Response Team (SERT) and the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Nearly 1.18 million storm victims have applied for disaster assistance since Hurricane Charley came ashore four months ago.
Of those who have registered so far, 842,650 have been referred to FEMA’s Individuals & Households Program (IHP) for temporary housing assistance and/or other disaster-related needs assistance. The remaining registrants have been referred to other state or federal assistance programs, withdrew their applications or were deemed ineligible for aid.
To date, 97.2 percent of all eligible referrals to IHP have been processed and approved for $998,862,039 in disaster aid. That amount is comprised of $469,051,193 to be used for temporary housing and $529,810,846 for other needs such as repair or replacement of essential personal property, medical, funeral, dental expenses and other disaster-related expenses.
A county-by-county breakdown of IHP assistance received is attached.
During the early stages of SERT’s and FEMA’s response and recovery effort, $1.164 million was approved for emergency response measures. These measures included such items as ice, water, food, temporary roofing and other emergency services.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $825.5 million to date in low-interest loans to repair storm-damaged homes and businesses. Of that amount, nearly $636 million in loans went to homeowners and $189.5 million to businesses.
Exactly, they will be DEMANDING another card every 2 weeks. You just wait, after 2 weeks they will be on TV crying and whining how $2K isn't enough they need several cards every MONTH. Heck, they need CARS, how are they suppose to get into town from the Astrodome??
