"if they are simply smart people who got out of the storm's path, they should wait and leave the lines open for those in desperate conditions"

I hear ya... but the reports are that their house in Plaquemines Parish (south of NO) was totally washed away.

Fellow Freepers:

At the suggestion of writer Michelle Malkin last Friday, I have cobbled together a blogsite called Texas Clearinghouse for Katrina Aid to serve as a clearinghouse for refugee efforts in Texas.

Texas is getting more refugees than any other state -- that's fine, we'll take them all -- but we need help providing them with food, clothing, and shelter.

If you are a refugee, you can information that will help you find relief. If you want to donate or volunteer, you can find someone who needs you.

Right now the site mostly covers Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio but I will add various churches, schools, and other charities in Ft. Worth and Lubbock tonight. My wife spent yesterday at Reunion Arena in Dallas handing out care packages and otherwise ministering to the refugees as a representative of her employer.

There are a lot of churches and other organizations in Texas that need help in dealing with the problem and I would greatly appreciate it if you would get the word out.

Many thanks,

Michael McCullough

Stingray blogsite

I can understand the anger, believe me I'm angry too. all we had for several days was radio and we were listening out of Mobile because for a while none of the radio stations on the coast of Mississippi were working. That crap going on in New Orleans is unacceptable. There are many, many people in Mississippi who have lost everything, homes and jobs. we were lucky, we only lost all our food. But it's not like I can go replace it tomorrow because I can't. Anyway, people in Mississippi are not acting like that! We are pulling together. We are depending on ourselves in these communities because quite frankly, we have to. There is no federal presence here in the rural areas. I don't care how scared you are, and believe me I was scared, I don't care what you've lost, there is NO EXCUSE for behaving like animals! My point is simply that most people are not. and we are not living on the taxpayers' dime but that doesn't mean we aren't hurting and don't need help. In fact, my husband is trying to get a job in Iraq so we can climb out of this mess.

I'm sorry - you're right. The headline actually reads, "Feds to Distribute $2,000 debit cards to Only Lazy, Welfare-Abusing Hurricane Katrina victims and none of the other 600,000 or so people without homes".

Interesting, in one breath, we demonize the mayor for not providing transportation for the indigent. In the next breath, we demonize the indigent for being indigent in the first place.

Pitiful.

Bravo!

What happened to wanting them to get on their feet? Don't they need to start finding their own housing instead of living with everybody and his dog?

They’ll just say it’s racist because white 9-11 victims got over 100 times that.

Maybe you don't understand that some of us differentiate between public and private charity. Maybe you figure if Mommy Government don't do it, no one will. Maybe you feel good enough saying your elected reps will dole out the money and you don't have to do it yourself. Some of us feel differently. People make choices in life and the government shouldn't confiscate one's money to give it to another. If I or anyone else want to give of our own, fine. And we do, believe it or not.

the majority of "these people" are not showing up on your television screen. They are hard working people who have lost their homes and their jobs (yes I said jobs). they do not live off the government or you.

Really, like the stellar performance of the privately run Red Cross during 9/11?

I live in Texas. I have said it before and I'll say it again, we are more than happy to help. However, I personally do not wish to see all of these folks stay in my state. We have well over 200,000 people here in shelters. I have yet to see any numbers on how many who evacuated in their own vehicles are still in the state. I can't see how giving them $2000 each is going to help matter much unless a lot of them have their own transportation and they pick up and move back to another town in LA.

I agree with you about the Government confiscating money from one person and giving it to others. However, the fact is they do. they taxes out of my husband's check every week too. And yeah i guess you could argue that I made the choice to live in acoastal area that is in the path of hurricanes. But I could also live in the midwest and get hit by a tornado or flood or maybe I could move west and get hit by an earthquake. The fact is, natural disasters can happen anywhere at anytime, including where you are. And if that were to happen, and since the government confiscates money that youv'e earned, wouldn't you want the government to spend that money helping you?

I see your point and sympathize. Texas is going to go bankrupt if these people don't find jobs.

With that said, other than forcing them out of the state and possibly giving employer incentives to hire them in states other than Texas, I don't see a solution forthcoming soon.

So, are you just drawn naturally to posts about sending people to Africa because the theory excites you, or what?

And you are even willing to send them halfway! How benevolent of you. Then what, they either jump out of a plane or off a boat? Is that from Jesus' popular "back to Africa" plan?

I would imagine that there is a database to check the expenditures. Hopefully there will be some restrictions on what is purchased with the cards, especially restrictions on liquor or they will have more problems at the Dome because of inebriated individuals.

My company gives each of its employees a credit/debit card for medical costs that insurance doesn't cover. The debits to the card are tracked very meticulously by the company that oversees the program. If they don't believe a purchase was for a health related cost, they will ask for a receipt.

So the capability does exist to track the purchases and know what each individual is spending and on what (Big Brother for sure, but probably not a bad idea in this case...can you imagine the 2000 being spent on a gun and ammo.)

My only question has been and continues to be, the money that is donated to Bush/Clinton fund and other charities, will any of it actually get into the hands of the evacuees...I sure hope so.

(Well, given that response, I guess we know how to read you now. Thanks for making it clear. ;O)

I was pinged to it. You understand how that works, right?

And you are even willing to send them halfway! How benevolent of you. Then what, they either jump out of a plane or off a boat? Is that from Jesus' popular "back to Africa" plan?

(There you go with that "back to Africa" thing again. Your slip is still showing.)

It was a thought, and not one that I'd put into action if given the chance. It was one of my less-benevolent moments.

Since you have apparently licked the bad thoughts thing, you are one righteous dude.

paying off the 911 victims

There has been talk by the refugees that they want the same compensation as the 9/11 families, I don't get it, it was a flood, they chose to stay there, 9/11 and the Gulf Coast are apples and oranges, why do they think they deserve the same as 9/11 families? AND they keep referring to this disaster as their tsunami, I don't get that either, two totally different issues, these gulf coast people had more than ample notice that a storm was coming, the tsunami victims never saw it coming.
