“I was all set to defend President Bush... ”

Yeah right... that's why all the urinals at the Trib have a picture of Bush taped on them.

Ha--What she said is true. I bet the vast majority of those on the Astrodome were on some sort of "public assistance" before the storm, and now they get more public assistance. What's the big deal with what she said???

"that's why all the urinals at the Trib have a picture of Bush taped on them"

The Trib is not particularly anti-Bush. It endorsed him both times, I believe.

Barbara Bush isn't the first person to have said this - it was public knowledge last week when these "refugees" were being transported out of NO - "I ain't neva goin' back!"

Stupid liberal talking points.....

The storm has exposed the ugly truth that "War on Poverty", "The Great Society", etc....have been abject and utter failures. Govt is not the answer.

Why would it not be a cause for concern if we Texans have to absorb a couple hundred thousand people, the majority of which are not producers and creators, in an already badly strained public system?

Well I went and looked at the quote she did say.

I saw it in that the people who showed up in Texas were poor and had nothing. They were given a bunch of aid that they had no money or resources to get for themselves.

People with money or extended family in other areas could go or stay where they wanted.

The really poor were being helped by Texas.

People can twist any statement into what they think it means.

The welfare queens of NO have realized that they can draw a check in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio just as easily as NO. Why would they want to go there again? Gang infested and destroyed, NO is history as far as they are concerned. I am bettin many thousands of these folks are now TEXANS permanently..............Hook'em!.........

You know Mr. Kass, I was gonna believe your screed about defending the President, but then I remembered that you are a fanatical idiot, so everything that people say about you on F.R. must be 100% true.

If you saw the ramshackle houses with no air conditioning where a large portion of those folks lived, you'd agree that living in the Astrodome was a step up. She was just pointing out the obvious, that they weren't in misery. Many of those folks have never stepped outside of NO.

Barb is right. It's like the bum kicking a can down the street responded when asked "Whatch doin'", he said, "Movin'".

John Kass is better than this. Royko would've bopped him upside the head had he read this tripe.

I was all set to defend President Bush...but then Barbara Bush, the president's mom...

Since when is it relevant what a President's 80 year old mother blurts in her dotage?

Since you are out to get President Bush, and if you want to beat a dog, any stick will do.

She would have been lying if she was talking about the seat of the daley crime family.

Now since the southern branch has been knocked out, why doesn't he bring more north.

BTW I am wating for the trib or the sun times to do a compression be NOLA politics and chicago politics, bet there are some awful scary similarities.

Observe the fanatical overreaction of the left. He has re-concluded that President Bush wants to KILL black people because the President's mother made an insensitive remark about the disadvantaged being better off in the relocation facilities. Last time I checked that would not be the criteria for a genocidal, racist, mass murderer.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

Based on my read of what she is saying, I have to agree with her. Many of the people stuck in N.O. appeared to be poor. These people are used to relying on government for everything...food stamps, welfare, housing, school buses for evacuation (unfortunately for them, Nagin screwed up the last one). For some people, it takes a significant life changing event to pull them out of the status quo. These evacuees have it rough now, but they had it rough before. It will stay rough for awhile, but they now have a chance to do something more with their lives. People all over the courtry are trying to help with housing and jobs. The libs don't care anymore about these folks. The libs prefer to continue government handouts...it will get them some votes. People need to realize they can not count on government to always be there. People need to fend for themselves. This a chance for a new start...now the best of circumstances, but still an opportunity.

Appears to me the stuff they're trying to sling on Bush isn't sticking...

..so now they've turned to his 80 yr plus old mom.

I find their attempts to 'get Bush' disgusting.

It's not a matter of whether what you said is true or not, it's a matter of whether it passes the PC smell test. This didn't.

True statement or not. It was a STUPID statement to make.
I'm sure many people believe this, but for her to say shows great insensitivity This is really going to hurt Bush, and that's is my concern.
