Evacuee charged in sexual assault

Plano: Man staying with relatives accused of attacking girl, 13

12:00 AM CDT on Wednesday, September 7, 2005

By JENNIFER EMILY / The Dallas Morning News

A Hurricane Katrina evacuee staying with a Plano family was arrested Tuesday and accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, police said.

Freddie Murray, 48, of New Orleans was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child. Mr. Murray is a distant relative of the girl, police said. Police didn't know the exact relationship.

"The guy is an evacuee staying with distant relatives, and he allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old staying at that residence," Plano police spokesman Officer Carl Duke said. "He's been taken out of the residence and is in jail."

There have been reports of rapes of evacuees staying in New Orleans shelters. No other reports of similar incidents in the Dallas area were known.

Jane Donovan, community educator for the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center, said parents must always be on guard when they invite people into their homes, whether it's someone they know or strangers.

"As heart-wrenching as these evacuees are, and as wonderful as it is to see the outpouring of support, when we invite anybody in our home, we have no idea what their background is," Ms. Donovan said. "As parents, if we open up our home, we need to put up conditions and boundaries. We need to not leave our children alone."

This is a perfect example of my earlier contention that, while the evacuation made Louisiana redder, Texas and other receiving states are becoming bluer in the process. Not all evacuees are criminals...but enough of them are to place a strain on the areas that receive them. It would not surprise me to see formerly safe GOP offices in the Houston area become Dimwit offices...or to see flight from formerly safe areas...there goes the neighborhood.

This is not a racial or ethnic statement...it is based on the fact that many of those who are being relocated are socioeconomically several levels down the ladder of success in comparison to the areas to which they are being relocated. I was at a bookstore yesterday and encountered a family of evacuees. Trailer trash that will undoubtedly hit the taxpayer lotto being reimbursed for possessions that I doubt exceeded a couple grand in value. The only thing missing were the dueling banjos.

Collin County is the wealthiest county in Texas. Why would anyone living in it want as new neighbors a bunch of poor and uneducated?...some of whom apparently are apparently violent criminals. If this was desired, I'm sure that Vicente Fox could send up a couple hundred thousand more illegals to fill the 'need.'

I empathize with losses...and have donated to charities for the relief efforts. However, don't make the human refuse problem of N.O. the problem of Texas...and don't overpay people with taxpayer money for possessions they never had in the first place.

My father called me tonight and asked if I had an empty room for a family of evacuees. I told him that I do if he knows of a family that would want to come here. He said he definitely does. Them.

They are in Dallas and have "had it with the immigration problem and now the increased crime that, intolerable before, is about to explode. There are just too many here and not enough resources."

I was a bit disappointed in my father for his pessimistic attitude. Now I read this. I fear they are going to prove him correct. :/ I expect to receive another call tomorrow after he reads the Morning News. I guess I better start getting that room ready.

My thought were to yes, open our resources up to them for a time being. Everyone in that shelter should be registered, finger printed and given an ID. Oh Im sure the ACLU would file a lawsuit.

We have to know what/who we are welcoming in. It also allows the City/State to help with finding jobs, homes etc.

Dallas for one is not doing that. They are putting colored arm bands on the evacuee's and letting them out(they are not prisoners, according to a DPS officer)to roam the City.

If we or any other state ends up with some of the prisoners who were let out in NO or other surronding areas, it is important to know who they are. Finger printing helps us determain if someone is who they say they are. Identity theft could be on the rise if we are not careful.

This is starting to remind me of the 1980 Cuban Mariel boatlift where Castro unloaded his prisoners on the U.S...and we were dumb enough to take them.

If anybody is thinking of volunteering housing, I've investigated the different housing websites and it seems to me that http://www.shareyourhome.org is the best of those on the web.

They do the screening and background checks. They match the family to the housing being offered. The other sites are basically just bulletin boards, leaving it up to individual offering the housing to do the screening.

I wonder what the penal code is under a state of emergency or martial law? Anyone believe they'll invoke it or will Blanco "favor" yet another "registered voter"?

I'm curious about the "State of emergency" question because I believe that status has been extended to some 13 states harbouring evacuess now. I'll see what I can find.

"Evacuee charged in sexual assault Plano: Man staying with relatives accused of attacking girl, 13"

Sorrily, sometimes no good deed goes unpunished. If this guy pulled this with his own family, any guesses he might be one of the wanted from the havoc in N.O. after the storm? That would be a safe bet.

I'll say it again--send them to closed military bases and let them live together like they did in New Orleans.

Disposal of the body should be easy, just send it back to New Orleans and let the feds do it when they dispose of the rest of them. No telling how many down there were killed by looters in stead of the storm.

What a relief! We thought it would be months before the evacuees of inner city New orleans would be feeling strong enough and confident enough to rape people again.

This is a triumph of the human spirit!

If only President Bush had violated the US Constitution and evacuated this upstanding citizen earlier!

Are the NO refugees going to be a replay of the Mariel boatlift?

If you have ever been to NO, you would naturally be wary of the people that live there. It has one of the highest murder rates and it is full of hustlers.

I guess I am spoiled because I can walk down any street in my town and not be afraid.
