Katrina, a photographic timeline: Powerful proof federal response was NOT slow (warning, many pics)
Yahoo News Photos ^ | 9/6/05

The near total evacuation of the major American port city of New Orleans, Louisiana was accomplished between Tuesday afternoon, August 30 and Friday afternoon, September 2, 2005. This evacuation occurred while other search, rescue, relief and evacuation operations were simultaneously being conducted throughout the Gulf Coast between approximately Lafayette, Louisiana, on the west and the Florida panhandle on the east -– an area of about 90,000 sq. miles, or the size of the entire nation of Great Britain.

I'd say this amazing achievement is the opposite of slow. I'd say that it's a stunning accomplishment and one that demonstrates superb organization, remarkable logistics flow, and the greatness of the American spirit.

From the following photographic timeline, it should be clear to all reasonable people that the failure of government response occurred before the hurricane hit, and it occurred solely at the local and state level.

Perhaps it was a simple misunderstanding. You said to see Post #12, but gave a link to Post #8.

There does seem to be an explicit list of countries and donation amounts at Operation Phantom Fury--Day 304 - Now Operations River Blitz; Matador--Day 199 -- Post #12. This looks like just what you asked for, Monkey Face.

"Got to hand it to Nagin...he acts decisively in a crisis. So what if he acts decisively a week after the crisis has hit. It's hard work being Mayor. [snicker and end sarcasm]"

Yep, but we're supposed to cut him some slack because he's "traumatized". In exactly what WAY he was traumatized while sitting in high, dry, TV and radio radio stations in a neighboring state has mysteriously never been explained.

Awesome Post! Thank you. I just spent Monday evening dining with 4 rabid Bush haters - They blamed EVERYTHING on Bush...mind you these were Yankees born and bred (3 of the 4 had never been to LA!) and knew NOTHING of the city, the local terrain or the crime and gang problem NO is well known for. ..........To quote one:"Why didnt Bush bring back the troops from Iraq" ??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

There is an old military axiom :

"Amateurs talk tactics. Professionals talk logistics".

These people are functioning at the level of 7 year olds who ask why Bush did not simply ask Scotty to beam those 30,000 people out of the Superdome and simply ask Scotty to beam 5,000 troops from Iraq to restore order.

From another thread:

A number of New Orleans police patrol cars have been spotted in Houston since Hurricane Katrina struck — several of which are now being stored in HPD parking lots, officials said.

Details about how the patrol cars arrived in Houston remained sketchy , more than a week after the devastating storm caused major flooding in the city.

"To our knowledge, (the patrol cars) have been driven by New Orleans police officers," said Lt. Robert Manzo, an HPD spokesman.

New Orleans police commanders are aware that several of their patrol cars are now in Houston, Manzo said.

"We were told not to stop them and we were told that these cars were not reported stolen," Manzo said.

The patrol cars apparently were taken by New Orleans police officers as they evacuated the city, officials said.

"That was the only mode of transportation," Manzo said. New Orleans police officials "are not interested in pursuing any charges against (the drivers.)"

Am in awe of you and your 'puter skills. My beloved husband (known to first-Freepers as 1John) would be SO impressed--heck--I am too!

BTW--last night on the NBC Nightly News (hosted by Brian Williams who could only stand being in the Superdome one night before high-tailing it out!!) they showed the famous FR photo of the buses and Lisa Myers actually asked why weren't they used for evacuation BEFORE Katrina hit. They also mentioned the evacuation plan and --shock of shocks- questioned why the LOCAL OFFICIALS did not use it.

So--the bus photo might just have legs!! God bless you for all your wonderful work and grant that the same thing happens with your FRoto-essay!

Also--if there is a CD made of it--how do I get a one?

I'm sure you're getting tired of the threads where alleged FReepers scream that the President should ignore the law when convenient, but this isn't one of those. Lots of ammo here, all in one place

No CD, just this thread. ThePythonicCow has already saved the photos to a server so that they can be preserved in FR archives. I will be reposting this thread in a day or so using TPC's service or my own account at Photobucket just to make sure the photos are preserved in the FR archives for future reference. They disappear from Yahoo pretty quickly.

I have what I know is a very picky question but I-10 runs East / West not North, yet most pictures I see say something about people fleeing North on I-10. Now I know it makes a U shaped dip south of the lake to pass through NO but still the general direction is East / West. Did anyone head East on I-10 or are all these folks on I-10 West towards Baton Rouge - Lake Charles - Houston?

"Amateurs talk tactics. Professionals talk logistics".

Reduces it all down to a wonderful, truthful slogan that even the media dunces might understand.

Great post. It begs the question of why the able bodied at the convention center didn't simply walk across the bridge to dry west bank?

Were they blocked by police or National Guard?

Thank you. I guess it was another poster who offered to make a CD of the incredible photo-essay you've done. I don't have time right now to go back a find who that was--but what a service it would provide to be able to hand people a CD of your fine work.

There aren't many. Here are two AP photos from 9/02/2005. Doesn't show looting, but pay attention to what's written on the window:

I found this photo of New Orleans' "finest" looting DVDs in the interest of resroring order and enforcing the law (top) and another guy defending his turf from looters on a thread dated August 31th

Hi, Curmudgeon. I've never been to New Orleans (or Houston, for that matter), so I can only rely on the Yahoo captions. Yahoo captions are notorious for their errors. I often edit or embellish them with my own commentary. However, their posting time/date stamps are, of course, accurate. That's mainly what I was after in including their captions with the pics.
