The flag-draped coffin of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist was brought to the Supreme Court's Great Hall this morning as court justices, his nominated successor and friends and family looked on in a highly symbolic and emotional ceremony marking the death of the nation's 16th chief justice.
Rehnquist's wooden casket, draped with the American flag, was carried up the Supreme Court's long marble stairs by a former assistant and seven former law clerks, including John Roberts, the man nominated by President Bush to succeed him. ... President Bush and first lady Laura Bush came to the court building shortly before 4 p.m. to pay their respects. While the public viewing line was stopped briefly, Bush and his wife walked over to the casket and stood there for a moment in silence. Then, accompanied by Justice Antonin Scalia, they viewed a portrait of Rehnquist before leaving.
As the pallbearers carried the casket up the stairs in the morning, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who has announced plans to retire from the court, wiped away tears and appeared visibly shaken. O'Connor has known Rehnquist since they attended Stanford Law School together. ... Justices Anthony M. Kennedy and David Souter were absent from the ceremony.

"...utter lack of respect for both the person and the Office of Chief Justice."
You know, that's the deal. Liberals think everything is about them. Souter probably got his knuckles rapped by the chief and is still wetting the bed at night. So he gets even by snubbing him at death. He is simply incapable of understanding that the office of the Chief Justice of the United States is something to be respectful of, regardless of who sits there at the moment, just like the Presidency, etc. But those conservative virtues are lost on libs like Souter.
Brief, passing flare-up of conscience?
He doesn't have to. His actions speak volumes.
Memo to Bush: Nominate a KNOWN conservative to replace SDO, otherwise you risk getting Soutered just like your dad did.
"gay pro bono thing"
That just sounds dirty!
Ouch...That's gonna leave a mark, better put some ice on it!

The heaviest load that can be carried by six or eight....
(i.e. emptying the trashcans of the other Justices).
;^) Roberts has more class than that!
Souter also is the only one who did not pen a tribute for
Rehnquist. He truly is a despicable man. Where is lightning when you need it?
This is also from the Washington Post:
Justice Anthony M. Kennedy was traveling in China and was unable to make it back in time for the ceremony; Justice David H. Souter was also out of town. Court officials said both men will be in Washington for the chief justice's funeral tomorrow.
"really beyond the pale for that little weasel Souter."
Weasel is as weasel does....Ruthie's lil weasel boy. He's gonna be a lost judgie when Buzzy Ruth checks out. She is his Chief Justice.
If so, how petty and petulant of him. What a small man.
Kennedy is in China, Souter in New Hampshire..... I'll cut Kennedy some slack, but Souter didn't even make a STATEMENT. BA$TARD.
Justices Kennedy and Souter skipped the ceremony??? What lowlifes. No class. None.
Did you see the film clips? I commented to my husband that Roberts even does Pall bearing well. He marched as straight as a sting without missing a beat while the others were bobbing, weaving, stumbling, and getting out of step.
"You are hysterical -- they didn't skip anything."
Who's hysterical? I didn't write the article, the Post did. Plus, where was Souter? He had 2 days to get back. It's not like it was his 4th cousin on his step-mom's side. Maybe the poster who said Souter was protecting his house from seizure was right.
Interesting that Souter and is the one justice who slapped brazenly slapped his appointing President in the face by totally betraying the resume that got him considered for the Supreme Court in the first place. Souter has been far worse than Kennedy or O'Connor. Stevens would be another traitor but he's been around so long that Rehnquist probably never bothered him about his liberal activist rulings. I suspect that Rehnquist showed no respect whatsoever for that little lying scumbag Souter.
I love your comments. Really did LOL. Thanks.
You editorialized that they "skipped" the ceremony -- a statement that implies a willful decision not to attend, an irresponsible accusation not corroborated by the available facts.
He ain't heavy Father, he's my Chief Justice.
