The American Atheists organization says President Bush should stop urging prayer for Hurricane Katrina victims because it violates the Constitution.
Ellen Johnson, president of the group said Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and Bush "should not be violating the Constitution by telling people to pray for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. It's unconstitutional for government officials to be promoting religion; and besides, judging from the speed of some relief efforts, officials should be busy working instead of preaching."

President is a citizen and it is his right to ask for prayer.
If he authorized and signed off on legislation, then I can see what these Godless bafoons are saying.
It doesnt suprise me that people who are militant anti-God understand the Constitution like they understand molecular biochemistry.

Please explain how the President is doing harm to the nation by urging prayer for the refugees.

Since when did Bush or Blanco become members of Congress? Only Congress is forbidden from creating a law endorsing a religion.

"Have they set up any atheist shelters?"
Major bombshell--right on target. Atheists
are splattered all over the landscape of
America and are already starting to smell.
Thanks for your great-behind-whomping
answer.

Even the Scientologists have gone into the shelters to offer massages and scan for Thetans.
To: Jacob Kell
While the atheists write their press releases against prayer, the Chrisitans of this country open their homes, pocketbooks, and hearts to the victims.
To: PresbyRev
"I think the Ellen Johnson is correct on this point."
Then I think you and Ellen Johnson ought to go somewhere you'd feel comfortable. America belongs to us, and we pray when we want without ANY atheists stopping us.

I didn't assert Bush was harming the nation ---- I do not think the Constitution calls for the role of the President to be that of official State Muezzin.
Certainly plenty of American Presidents have called for national days of thanksgiving, prayer, etc. Other presidents have not. Jefferson resisted such acts, not because he didn't pray, but because he was President - not pope or preacher.

No... more like alpha particles. They use their geiger counters to see if Xenu has returned among the evacuees... or so I imagine.

You are full of it. Bush didn't ask us to pray to JESUS CHRIST THE LORD AND SAVIOR. He just said PRAY. Pray to God, the wind, Osama bin Laden, whoever. Just pray.

The Constitution says the government will not establish a specific state religion. Exactly what single religion does simply saying "pray for them" establish? Right-- NONE.
Some people are so anti-religion they see red at the mention of the word "prayer." It's pathetic really.

I haven't heard them condemning black politicians hanging out with Reverend Jesse Jackson.
Did they throw a fit when Reverend Al Sharpton ran for President?

America doesn't belong to you. Thank goodness for the protections of our secular Constitution. It is what protects folks from fanatics.
In 1817 in a letter from John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, wrote: Oh! Lord ! Do you think that a Protestant Popedom is annihilated in America? Do you recollect, or have you ever attended to the ecclesiastical Strifes in Maryland, Pensilvania, New York, and every part of New England? What a mercy it is that these People cannot whip and crop, and pillory and roast, as yet in the U.S.! If they could they would.
To: Jacob Kell
What's REALLY upsetting is all of these Churches and faith based organizations providing shelter and relief after the hurricane.
Separation of Church and disaster relief!!!
