The American Atheists organization says President Bush should stop urging prayer for Hurricane Katrina victims because it violates the Constitution.
Ellen Johnson, president of the group said Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and Bush "should not be violating the Constitution by telling people to pray for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. It's unconstitutional for government officials to be promoting religion; and besides, judging from the speed of some relief efforts, officials should be busy working instead of preaching."

I want to know how much the American Atheists have donated to hurricane relief? Have they set up any atheist shelters? No? Then STFU

I think Bush should offer prayers in Islam. Then there wouldn't be controversy.
It would be great if they would actually READ the Constitution.
Only in military service do you give up certain rights, and for job-specific reasons in the private sector.
President Bush can tell us to worship God or Satan if he wishes; you don't lose that right by being elected.
I think Johnson is correct.
Bush is not the theologian-in-chief whether he is promoting Christianity or some sort of ceremonial Deism. As an example of why Bush should refrain from such a role: he has certainly made some questionable declarations, from my perspective, concerning the nature and intention of Islam.
Separation of the state from the church - the confining of the state in its own sphere - is a protection to religion, to the Church.
I don't need enjoinders from Bush, or any other official of the state, to pray or carry out any other act of religious devotion. So, with those in the dissenting and free churches in the founding era ---- Baptists, Quakers, Presbyterians ---- I think the Ellen Johnson is correct on this point.
Nothing more intolerant than an evangelical atheist.
Actually - if you hit the atheist/freethinker sites many of them are coordinating relief efforts for Katrina survivors.

I'm an agnostic that on the Sunday night before the storm, prayed for the City of New Orleans to be spared.
It was my first prayer since I was the age of six.
Figured it couldn't hurt.
With no understanding of the Constitution, either.
They are ankle-biting, whiny brats. Why don't they just claim we are still part of England because the Declaration of Independence references God?
